The Switch OLED's were selling for like $500+ during COVID and were impossible to find in retail stores. Not sure what you're talking about but this is as low as I've seen them.

They literally didn't even exist in 2005. Your comment is a real head-scratcher.

Hardware don't get worse with time. It will always play what it can play when you buy it. It will never "degrade" to the point that you can only play "tetris"

I kinda agree but they're not really comparable, people buy nintendo for the nintendo exclusives, there is no alternative

The only thing that really stinks with the SteamDeck is the battery life is pretty bad even with the battery saving tweaks but I do always have a PD battery bank around that delivers enough juice to charge while playing.
The battery is bad. I can normally get about 2 hours of a modern FPS before it is 30% or below. On the typical day though I only play for 45 minutes to 1-1/2 hours, so I can more than live with that. I just make sure to always charge it between sessions. The Switch I could go a couple of play sessions without charging but to be fair the ports I played on the Switch are far from "modern" nor were are the graphics anywhere near comparable. The Switch is like that 1998 Nokia brick phone that lasted 2 weeks between charges, hardly fair to judge it against a smart phone.

What battery bank are you using? Haven't tried one yet.

I definitely don't miss following Dekudeals for any game (digital or physical) price drops for games I have been interested in.
LOL I think Dekudeals is going to call in a welfare check for me, I used to go to that site 3-4 times per day and for the last month....zero need.

The prices for steam games on the "grey" sites are better a majority of the time and a great deal can always be found.
I have enough games in my Steam library to last a lifetime. Plus the Heroic Launcher makes Epic and GOG integration seamless. I was amazed for Wolfenstein: The New Order on Epic (owned somehow but never played) I was playing with no changes to config; with pre-mapped controls and with default graphics settings. I understand Steam has tweaked most of their games to run on the Deck but Epic has done nothing and it worked out of the box. Could not be more impressed.

Wow, fantastic deal. I would definitely be ordering an OLED at this price had I not gotten one on launch. Couple little quirks with my OLED, and I do think Nintendo cut corners on screen quality a little, but I'm happy with the upgrade.

For $75 more buy a steam deck. Dark Souls, Forza, Need for speed, Nier, etc.
Well if all you care about is third-party, indie, or multi-platform games then perhaps. People largely buy into the Nintendo ecosystem for the exclusive titles though and it's been that way since the dawn of time. Also last time I checked the Steam Deck doesn't include a dock like the Switch does. Funny how people always seem to conveniently leave that out. In terms of pure functionality, if anything it would more appropriate to compare the Steam Deck to the Switch Lite at $200 if you ask me. Don't get me wrong, as a long time PC gamer as well I think the Steam Deck is a cool piece of tech and competition in general is good for the industry, however if the battery life ends up being only 2-3 hours then that is a kind of a deal-breaker for me, regardless of how capable the hardware is.

edit: not to mention the question and timing of availability

The Steam Deck is not a "killer" of anything, it is an option.
My point was: if you had a Steam Deck and a Switch, you'll probably never touch the Switch again unless you have to play a Nintendo exclusive.

Options are good, I can't understand why people get so down on something that someone else may or may not want to use.
Agreed, and again, not saying anything negative about the Switch, but for me, not needing to play a certain branded game, the Steam Deck does everything, it does everything so much better, and for less money (once you factor in the cost of just 2 games).

I've been using this but I believe they are no longed stocked. The newer versions of this one should be great. They are a bit pricey but worth it IMO.

Seriously! It took me quite a bit of time to convert all my wish-listed items from Deku to Steam... I think I had like 140-150 games I had to add. I DID leave the Nintendo exclusive games and games that for some reason are not on steam but I rarely visit Deku anymore. Gg.deals does a great job with their filters to help me find Steam deals and even further filtering SteamDeck Verified and Playable.

Same here, to be honest I installed a few games from Epic and GOG via the same method and used basher to install some icons but I think I had an overload and just went to my default Elden Ring Wink I wish there was some way to bring over my cross progression from Xbox as I WAS level ~110... I did repurchase (for waaaaay below MSRP) and have already gotten to around level ~55. Man this game is definitely my GOTY. I wonder what it will take to get me sick of it. The only other game that has pulled me for short bursts is Vampire Survivors.

You are wasting your money. If you build a good system from the start you shouldn't have to spend thousands every year to upgrade. My systems will last me at least 3 years or longer with maybe just to the video card
I've been using my build since 2014, but it's all about what you want out of it.

Switch is for first party titles and great local play with a few others sprinkled in. It's not trying to be what the other two are and doesn't have to. This is a deal for those looking for the Switch right now.

I keep waiting to see if they release a newer Switch.

It's a cool game but I don't want tech from a decade ago

Uh...external display can be used. It's not rocket engineering.

Battery varies by game, just like any handheld. Are you new to tech? Your phone can last 12hrs+ looping a video, yet 2hrs playing Fortnite. Obviously doing certain activities at higher TDP will kill the Deck quicker. That's why it features ways to reduce usage.

As for games, you can emulate the Switch's library with far better performance with a 3050. Games like Astral Chain need modern hardware...30 and lower fps is no good.

Thanks I'll look into that. I do a bit of traveling so that will be really helpful!

Honestly I have never heard of gg.deals. Now I have a new site to visit 5 times a day...and oddly my work does not block it. They block pretty much anything game related but I can look at gun websites all day long. Zelda = bad, AK-47 = Good!

Had not tried Bash launch either, will have to research.

I hate that so much, wish they made cross platform save transfers far more common. I know it's old but I had almost finished Fallout 4 on Xbox One. But I really hate playing consoles. now I can play on the Deck but do I really want to do it all over again? Same thing with Red Faction Guerilla (really old!). I almost beat it on PC, just recently played through to about 60% on the Switch, now do I pick up again to finish on the Deck? Honestly, I hope my Steam process is cloud saved from a few years ago but haven't checked. Oddly Red faction: Guerilla is Steam Deck verified but the newer "reMARStered" edition is "unsupported."

Thanks again for all the info!!!

Exactly. This Tegra is ancient. You get sub 30fps on many games with low res visuals. Performance on 3rd party games is abysmal.

A lot of the first party games like Pokemon are boring...then they rehashed diamond era titles with garbage graphics.

You mean like 99% of the non-Nintendo games ported to the Switch? The Switch has very few exclusive titles that were not just recycled from prior Nintendo hardware.

The first is a short list and the second is not a selling point, just people following old habits.

A $15 USB C hub to the rescue.

Because they saved the $15 by getting a free case from Valve. Odd you leave out the fact you had to buy a case for the Switch Wink

Highest end hardware vs the lowest end. Is it even possible to 'dock' or output control on the Switch Lite to a TV or monitor? I don't think so but I could be wrong. I can literally use my Steam Deck as a desktop PC or gaming computer by using my laptop's docking station to connect to a monitor, keyboard, mouse, speakers, etc

You can quickly scale back the battery, resolution, and FPS to Switch levels if you want better battery life as a trade off for graphics and performance...but you won't want to. And the Switch has great battery life, on some games. Other games eat it up, especially if you are playing online. But you are right, if you are planning to play for 3+ hours unconnected to power, then the Deck might be a bad option.

People are still fighting to get PS5's and Xbox X's...the Switch was hard to find for 2 years at launch and during the pandemic. "Availability" is hardly something anyone should complain about when it comes to the Steam Deck.

Almost all Switch games work on both Lite and Regular except for a few games that need separate joycon controllers like Ring Fit Adventure. Portability is the same between the models. The main difference that the Lite can't connect to a TV / monitor and has smaller screen and battery.
