Surface Pro 8: $799.00

Supposedly the pro x skimps on the core processors and more like chrome books. So for +$100 might be worth it for the higher cost. Sale directly from Microsoft.

It has been this price several times before. I had one and returned it because there were a few issues that killed the deal for me. The first thing was that it would not print to an HP Color LaserJet using a JetDirect card. Apparently, you need a driver for the printer that doesn't run on an ARM processor. The other reason was that it wouldn't run MS Office Professional Plus for which I already had a license.

Microsoft hasn't figured out ARM yet, and there are major compatibility gaps with these. I ended up going with a Surface 7+ and it's been a good compromise, almost all of the performance of the Surface 8 and several hundred dollars cheaper.

I also went with the Surface Pro 7+. I bought a Surface Pro 8 on the release date and returned it within a week. Starting with the Surface Pro 8, Microsoft started making the case out of aluminum instead of magnesium like all the previous Surface Pros. The Surface Pro 8 was only a little over 5 ounces heavier than the Surface Pro 7+, but it made enough of a difference that the Surface Pro 8 was too heavy for reasonable tablet use. Also, the Surface Pro 7+ had the exact same processor, and the ability to easily swap out the SSD, just as in the Surface Pro 8.

I have one and love it but am admittedly probably not the average consumer. +70% MS office usage, 20% web browser, 10% media. I've tried the iPad pro multiple times and still like the X better.

Am I the only one that never knew Microsoft was making their own SoC now?

Microsoft has been trying to do Windows on ARM since the original Surface a decade ago. It's been a total failure - big performance penalty, compatibility issues (negating Windows' biggest selling point), all for a battery life improvement that sometimes looked good on paper, but meanwhile regular Windows (not to mention Apple Silicon) laptops have gotten much better in that regard. There's a point of diminishing returns - when laptops only got 4 hours people might have been able to accept certain compromises, but now that laptops regularly get 7-10 hours, not so much. And if I really need more I'd rather bring a Power Delivery battery bank, than accept the compromises that Windows on ARM still imposes.
