Does anyone know if the hard drive can be harvested for use internally on another devise? Is this available in store too?

Yes Seagate portable (2.5 inch style) drives can typically be "shucked" and the internal hard drive used. It is WD's portable (2.5 inch style) drives where the USB port is integrated into the drive motherboard/backplane.

Yes these drives are typically available at local Costco warehouses. Bought one of these drives a while back at the $89.99 sale price from my local Costco.

Besides smaller form. How does this compare to the seagate backup plus for use as a backup hard drive for Mac?
My local Costco also had the 8tb seagate backup plus on clearance for just a bit more, trying to decide between the two
