Even though REI's return policy is good, the Osprey Arcane Large Top Zip Pack doesn't seem worth the time. It doesn't have enough compartments, it's slightly water resistant, no outside mesh pocket for water bottles, basically missing the essentials to be a day bag which it's toted to be.

One of the reviewers mentioned that on smaller people, it looks like you're wearing a kite on your back since the edge flaps are rigid and won't fold. Very true.
This is only 18L volume, pretty small. A good backpack, what I gather, to have comfortable space for your everyday items and for everyday use, must be 30L, or 35L at minimum for me. That's just everyday use. For longer excursion use, you need 40L+

IMO you need to go a bit above the $40 price point for a day pack with the features that you want. Take a look at The North Face Recon model or some of the Alps Mountaineering packs, and then buy when they go on sale.
