NO! What you need for sheet metal is probably a MIG or even TIG machine. Stick is for heavier metals, will burn through sheet metal faster than you can say SH*T. But this certainly looks like a great price for a small starter machine. Seems to have decent reviews.

Sounds like a high-current flux-core machine is the ideal welder for first timers and stick weld takes a lot of skill and grinding? Am I right?

You want a wire fed not stick. Those are just sloppy.

My account was not showing the discount at first. I had to add to cart then return to the product page for the discount to become available.

EDIT: Even after checking the discount box the discount seems to be removed once I get to the check out page. Weird...

Also not showing for me on my prime account. Targeted? Tried your method and still can't get the coupon to show.

You could gamble with any of the cheap Chinese welders on eBay, I bought a cheap 140amp Eastwood knockoff years ago and it still does great with everything up to 1/8".

Here's a cheap 90amp with a regulator, guess it all depends on your budget, 90amps would be fine for body panels

Here's a cheap china 200amp that does mig Tig and arc for $270

If you get into name brand you're looking at about double the cost and if you want to run gas instead of flux core wire then that'll be another $100+ investment in the least.

Gas mig will look the cleanest, flux core would work fine as well given you buy quality wire.

Look up a good welder, a Lincoln Ac//dc + ~ welder and see the cost on that. I've used one for years but it's really hard to do thin metal. I've done exhaust work but i burn through way too easy. Not sure why the downvotes. I have welded a lot of tractor parts though with stick welder, trailers etc. Some the welds aren't great but they have held up.

Your not going to just buy this and start welding tomorrow. You need a proper helmet, pic, multiple size sticks depending on the job. Need a lot of space for flying sparks and slag hot metal flying off.

Wire feed may be a better first time learner welder.

I now have the same $25 discount as the post above me. Looks like they updated the coupon. Can confirm it actually works now even though its $10 less than originally stated.

Correction: You always want a TIG welder when dealing with automotive anything.

It's not long before your "auto body welder" friend decides he can do your exhaust with a MIG.
I migged my muffler cans (had to open them up to modify the stock piping a bit, common mod in the C6 corvette) 12 years ago and coated it with some high temp paint and it is still perfect. Many others have done the same mod. Very thin steel.

I've migged exhaust pipes and body panels too, some even with flux core and not gas, and no issues after years.

Grind it down well to make sure any oxidation that did get in there is gone, and protect it and it is fine.

I'd say wire for beginners is probably easiest. I did my very first weld with a stick and it wasn't bad but it was welding a lally column to an I beam so there was no risk of burning through and it didn't have to be pretty.

But with wire weld, a beginner will still probably have to do plenty of grinding and filling in the holes, nothing to be ashamed of.

Grab the $10 10 pack of flap wheels from supreme abrasives next time it comes around. They wear quicker than a grinding wheel but also work much faster. I use both depending on how much needs to be ground down. If it is a lot, I will use the wheel for the bulk of it and spend the extra time as otherwise you'll burn through a lot of $ in flaps. Then just final cleanup with flap.

I'd be a tad nervous of a cheap welder, there is a transformer in there that is put under huge stress, and cheaper ones could very well be more dangerous. Granted even a Lincoln stick welder is pretty cheap (they used to be $100, probably more these days). However I'd still pay attention to the duty cycle of the unit and not push it hard. Also keep in mind duty cycle can be interpreted many ways, the 60% is hopefully more clearly defined in the manual. It may be 6 seconds max, it may be 2x 3 minute welds out of each 10 mins, etc. The standard is supposed to be out of 10 minutes, so in this case you can weld for 6 and rest for 4. But I have a feeling a cheap unit like this would have a hard time doing 6 straight minutes frequently. Probably like 90 seconds, rest for a minute, 90 seconds, rest for a minute, etc.

How often do you run these through smog checks?

I'm guessing rarely to never.

Every year. Mufflers do not impact emissions.
