You must be joking. The Nvidia Shield runs rings around the crappy Roku. And Roku is about to lose a lot of apps because of their greedy "all money must go through us policy"

Firesticks and Rokus are garbage, and even the Fire Cube (yes, I have them all) can't compare to the shield. I even hacked mine so that I can press the nextflix button a short press and open plex. Long press, open netflix and double click it, and it opens hulu.

I've owned every version of Firesticks /Fire TVs except the cubes. I also own an Apple TV 4k (2017). My Shield is the 2017 version. My breakdown below:

Firestick 4k Max: Best bang for your buck streamer. Can be found on sale for around $35.

Pros:

Affordable
Supports every iteration of HDR (Dolby Vision, HDR10, HDR10+, HLG)
AV1 support
Can play Youtube HDR
Can sideload apps (Kodi, etc.)
Wifi 6

Cons:

UI is ad-supported
Needs additional hardware to run ethernet and increase storage
No bitstreaming of HD audio
Occasionally needs to be rebooted

Apple TV 4K: Best pure streamer. 2021 model can be found on sale for $120-$130

Pros:

Very fluid UI. Fastest, smoothest navigation
No ads (mostly) There is autoplay enabled to some of their music video selection
Airplay 2. If you have Airplay 2 devices this makes multi room audio incredibly easy
Gigabit Ethernet

Cons:

Locked down to apple's ecosystem (No Kodi, etc.)
No usb ports for storage or game controllers
No HDR10+
No AV1 support
No Youtube HDR

Nvidia Shield: Swiss-army knife of streamers. Can be found on sale for $170

Pros:

Great for game emulators
64 bit Android (can run Dolphin emulator, Kodi 64 bit, etc)
Has usb ports for storage, game controllers, webcams, etc
Can sideload apps (Kodi, etc)
Can use Google Duo with supported webcam
Can run Plex server
Can run Channels DVR server
Bitstreams HD audio
AI upscaling (I do not have this version)
Gigabit ethernet

Cons:

Ad-supported
Last update introduced many issues (I did not update)
No HDR10+
No Youtube HDR
Occasionally needs to be rebooted

I'm sure I missed a few things but this is a general idea. I have a use case for all three streamers so I have them all connected to my main display. It really comes down to personal use case. I'm personally hoping NVidia upgrades the Shield to support AV1, HDR10+ and Youtube HDR. That would eliminate my need for the Firestick 4K Max. Being able to have the game on and airplay to other rooms makes the Apple TV 4K a keeper to me.

Hope this helps

Love my Shield TV have used it for years and it's well supported with updates from Nvidia. Probably the best supported Android device of any kind (on par with Google Pixel) with updates.

The USB ports are awesome, and works great with all the typical streaming apps, along with X-plore, VLC, Kodi, RetroArch, Chromecast, etc.

Also on sale today, Amazon is currently offering the NVIDIA Shield TV Stick for $124.99 shipped. Normally fetching $150, you're looking at yet another rare chance to save as the lead deal, with today's offer matching our previous Prime Day mention for the 2022 low. This is also only the second price cut of the year. While not as capable as the Pro model above, the Stick version of NVIDIA Shield packs much of the same Android TV features with 4K HDR playback, too.

Same here. I'm still using both of mine with no issues.

There seems to be a lot of confusions out there.

For those who just want a streaming device with faster processor, I understand why you don't want to pay 7x more than a Fire stick. In that case, I think you should stick with yours. Smilie

However, for some people who want the following capabilities, they need to decide if the $180 price tag is worth it:
- plays a mix of audio format including DTS HD
- acts as a PLEX media server with transcoding capability (so you can play 4k content with ease on your other streaming devices)
- upscales to 4k better than most 4k TV (debatable?)

You and the guy you were responding to are fanboys of the products you like. Both products are good. I have a Roku Ultra, and it streams things just fine. I have the Shield (tube), and it streams things fine too. For special case uses, do the research re which works best. But to say either is garbage is an overreach.

I have the 2017 version, but I think I will just wait a bit longer to see if they come up with a newer model in the future.

The only thing the 2019 version offers is 4k upscale and Dolby Vision, correct?

How do you do that? My mom is using it with a monitor so the IR volume control doesn't work with the monitor. I would like to get those volume buttons work with changing the volume within Android instead of changing the "TV" volume. Thanks.

I wanted a Shield Pro for a long time and finally pulled the trigger when it was on sale for Prime day. It's definitely showing it's age and I don't think it's worth this price even on sale. It's not any noticeable upgrade over my Roku Ultra from 2018 in terms of daily streaming. Only positives is it supports more audio formats and occasional gaming. Also, not the Shield's fault, but couldn't believe there was an Apple TV app but no Apple Music app, so now I have to switch back to my Roku when I listen to music. Hopefully I can sell my current Shield when a new model inevitably drops soon.

Could be an indication that a replacement is on the horizon.
Unless they're stuck with too much inventory.
The price on Amazon was reduced to $169.99 less than a month ago (prime day deal).

Will the Shield run as a server allow me to set recordings of live tv through Plex using my HDHomerun networked tuners? I run a PC 24/7 as my Plex server now and am considering moving the duty to the Shield..

Is there a new model coming out any time soon? If so I will just wait to get that. I think I have the 2017 Shield and it still works great, but it doesn't have Atmos support. When I choose Atmos sources on Kodi the screen is purple or green for some reason. I will hold out for a bit longer if a new model is coming.

A Button Mapper app from the Google Store. You can do it with the free version.

Yep, but this thing is outdated. They need to add a newer processor and internal memory.
Why does everyone want this to be updated? A well built product should last many years without any hardware changes. It has become very difficult to find these types items out there, since most manufacturers build expensive but cheaply made products that are designed to break in a couple of years.
