Firesticks and Rokus are garbage, and even the Fire Cube (yes, I have them all) can't compare to the shield. I even hacked mine so that I can press the nextflix button a short press and open plex. Long press, open netflix and double click it, and it opens hulu.
Firestick 4k Max: Best bang for your buck streamer. Can be found on sale for around $35.
Pros:
Affordable
Supports every iteration of HDR (Dolby Vision, HDR10, HDR10+, HLG)
AV1 support
Can play Youtube HDR
Can sideload apps (Kodi, etc.)

Cons:
UI is ad-supported
Needs additional hardware to run ethernet and increase storage
No bitstreaming of HD audio
Occasionally needs to be rebooted
Apple TV 4K: Best pure streamer. 2021 model can be found on sale for $120-$130
Pros:
Very fluid UI. Fastest, smoothest navigation
No ads (mostly) There is autoplay enabled to some of their music video selection
Airplay 2. If you have Airplay 2 devices this makes multi room audio incredibly easy

I'm sure I missed a few things but this is a general idea. I have a use case for all three streamers so I have them all connected to my main display. It really comes down to personal use case. I'm personally hoping NVidia upgrades the Shield to support AV1, HDR10+ and Youtube HDR. That would eliminate my need for the Firestick 4K Max. Being able to have the game on and airplay to other rooms makes the Apple TV 4K a keeper to me.

A few years back THIS device was KING! Long live the KING the masses chant (3 year later) as they chop off his head!
We will find out in a few months if the NEW and IMPROVED Shield will rule them all or not (again).
I guess buy this if you like tech that is old but solid (in tech years).
I did buy some Fire 4k max sticks on super sale for around 25 dollars. If you are casual, this might work for you, or get this device and hope you are still happy when the NEW shield comes out.

There are some exclusive features, but come on, 16GB eMMC internal storage? 7 year old CPU? Almost the price of a Xbox Series S with 500GB SSD and controller??
The fact that it still costs this much is pretty crazy, considering the Apple TV 4K (2nd Gen) has a better processor and better streaming support, and has been as low as $110 in the past month.
Note: I have had the 2015 Shield and the 2017 Shield, which were the same, and used my Fire TV more. To consider buying essentially the same device 5-7 years later is insane. Still a more powerful Android TV box, but severely outdated hardware at an unnecessary premium. I haven't tried this particular model, but, again, main change is AI upscaling and a remote that's maybe more useable. Edit: Also added Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos in this newer version, which most other devices can also do already.

i bought an Nvidia Shield Pro during prime day and updated it right away, but it has locked up 3 times in apps, rebooted itself once and totally locked up once requiring a power cycle. and that is only in the first 30-days of ownership.

If you do Kodi(get real-debrid) & IPTV(use tivimate pro), this is really the only choice for smooth operation.

It doesn't vitally need a new version because it's still great if one uses several of its many feature advantages. It's also true that a new version might cost much more. I wanted to run a Plex media server on the Shield but my DVD backup images are in .iso, which I understand Plex server won't handle. Kodi will, but I wanted Plex, and I don't want to convert them all again to something like .mkv. So strange that the device like the Shield that handles every possible file format would have a Plex server app that can't handle one popular type.
A sign of a great product is when you only need to have a 15%-off sale to sell a lot of units.
