I asked a more experienced camper what's the difference between this and a Coleman. It's not just the BTU's, take a look at the burner. The Camp Chef has a ring around it that direct the flames up and protects it from the wind. If you look at the Coleman the burner is a basic design where you'll be losing a lot of heat.

I don't plan on using the 1lb tank, buying an adapter hose for 5 or 20lb tank depending on how long my trip is.

I've had this stove for years, its wonderful. My one tip is start the burners much lower than you would on your home stove, this thing can rip.

How does this compare to the basic Coleman stove? Should I upgrade?

Not bad for the price but the Everest 2X is an improved version you may want to wait for a sale:

Picked one up. Need this for upcoming camping trip. Hopefully these are good despite the reviews with quality control.

If your stove struggles to put out enough heat during inclement weather, you should consider it. Colemans usually put out no more than 11,000 BTUs per burner while this one does 20,000

Great deal. I'm replacing the exact model that a tree fell on while camping. This stove is very fast to boil water, even at 9,000 foot elevation.

This looks small in diameter to put a 10 or 12" pan on. True or false?

I use this cookset from Stanley with both the pot and saucepan on with ease.

Yes. You just need the right hose which plenty can be found on Amazon. I will be using this with a 5lb tank along with a gas grill via Y connector. The heat output of this stove will use up those green 1lb bottles pretty quickly.

random thoughts
The Coleman's are on clear out at sams for 30 right now about 10k per burner.

this stove seems nicer but even the 10k burners boil pretty fast unless you have a 16qt pot.
also
This will frost a small propane tank really fast.

40k btu out of a 1lb is absurd.
