Great product. I use mine almost every day for streaming, Steam streaming and Kodi. Much better for kodi than firetv if you have a large library.

Its interesting to see most positive comments are from people who own this and use it daily. The nay sayers look at the spec on paper and call it crap or they dont have a use case for such a powerful player.

Could someone help me understand the benefit of using this if I have Android TV already on my Sony a80J?

I love movies and I'll usually watch them with Atmos on local storage using USB-to-TV. I'm also able to get Atmos with Netflix or Disney+ on the TV.

Does the Shield help with Atmos or HDR or anything else in a way that I'm missing?

Thanks!

How well does this work as a Plex Server if I want to connect an external drive with large media files? My old QNAP NAS just chugs, but have heard mixed things about the Shield as a Plex Media Server.
It can handle a couple clients that are transcoding. It's preferable they don't (transcode).

Use a wired network connection lf you're connecting a storage device at the same time. USB 3 interference WiFi significantly.
Never had issue with 4k/Chromecast.
I even stream my console and PC games from time to time, you need a gamepad for that of course.
Nvidia game steam offer free streaming at no cost for some trials and titles you already own for up to 1 hour each time, not the best graphics but you can play games without downloading it.

Got mine for $100 used at a local bookstore. Great little device for retro gaming and streaming.

At this price point, why not get an Xbox One X?

A used one, maybe. But this device can play retro games and work as a Plex server.

First of all it should be much faster/smoother in terms of user interface. If you require upscaling shield is supposed to do better but I never managed to do a side by side comparison and honestly I don't see any real difference when used concurrently. If you are getting 4k source with HDR and Atmos you should not really see any difference. Where the shield shines is streaming (e.g. avoiding the step of putting the movie on USB). With Kodi it can be an incredible one stop media hub. You could do the same with your Android tv but in my experience (not sure how Sony is doing here) they put as weak a CPU in the tv as possible with least amount of ram so trying to run Kodi or something more demanding just becomes pretty laggy after a while, especially if you have a big library.

It's only suitable as a server for small libraries with optional features like thumbnailing turned off. The real problem is the 16GB which gets eaten up by metadata and fanart fast. You can add usb storage (sata or nvme, thumb drives are not recommended) but that's an additional cost.

For plex playback it's a champ.

I just bought Samsung 8K tv. I have my older one hooked up but honestly prefer to use the Smart tv function so I can get as much good picture as possible and minimize any loss in the cables. nVidia is still the best tv box ever. I would like to see a refresh or even better an 8K version. I think what would be the Greatest is if nVidia comes out with a 4K Blueray media streaming that is very powerful!
What loss do you think you will get from a proper HDMI connection?

Check your WiFi router. If you have a weak WiFi and slow internet speed, streaming over WiFi might not be the best option. In any case, wired internet is the best option.

Xbox has one of the worst video watching experience I have ever seen (to be honest I tried S rather then X and that was some time ago) even when laying UHD Blu ray the image looked much worse than what shield does when streaming. On top of that while you can run Kodi on an Xbox setting it up is a nightmare, Microsoft doesn't support smbv1 so if your Nas/router is old no Kodi for you. They update it and wreak havoc to the setup. Plus it spins the fans while playing a movie... I tried the very same thing thinking the CPU in Xbox should run laps around shield which was getting laggy and overcrowded for me, it went back within a week.

Does PS Remote Play work on this device?
Yes, you can get a pretty great app that will do it. It's not through Sony though.

edit: Someone else has answered this question but incorrectly. so here is my reply to them.

The app is called PSPlay and it works great. It's on the Amazon store and can be downloaded directly to any firetv but for this you have to side load it. Been using it for a couple years now myself and can attest to functionality.

It's incredibly easy to use if you're on the same network, but can also be used if on an entirely different network, but with some more complicated setup. http://grill2010.github.io/psplay/index

I've been using my Xbox one x for some time now and haven't had any issues. I don't use Kodi though. I haven't heard any fans on the XB1X kick in at all yet, even while gaming.

This seems to be one of the lowest prices it's ever been. I also just called customer service and for Bluetooth it supports the aptx and LDAC codecs. For this reason I'm going to buy one.
