It's in stock for me in socal. A fair warning to those who buy 3080 and want to change the thermal pads. The founders edition uses these flat strips for data and power instead of 4 pin connectors for fans. They are near impossible to get it so don't rip them when disassembling.

might be worth looking into K5 Pro. LTT did a video of it using it on a 3090 strix and had excelent results even better than thermal pads. Major downside is that it's messy, but if you only tear down the card once the messy factor might not be an issue.

I've actually got my hands on thermal putty which is really good to replace the pads. They even make cooper heatplates to cover the memory modules. Takes it from 90c down to 60c.

But is it necessary if card is just used for Gaming?

Debatable. Some people like to upgrade after a couple of years so it may not be worth all that much. I've held onto gpus for a while with one being in use for 9+ years.
Another point on the used market. If I was buying a 3080 and it had the copper mod, I wouldn't hesitate to pay more for a well cared GPU.
is there a benefit to buying this FE w/10 GB vs the 12GB versions we are now seeing for $749 or less pop up here on SD? I guess the question is whether 20% more VRAM is worth a ~10% bump in price?

Only real benefit of the 3080 FE is a $50 savings and the most compact 3080 available. Also it is slightly less power hungry than the 12gb models. Of course the 12GB models have 2GB vram, better coolers and slightly better performance.
