Most people just use this as outlet splitter anyway. If you are really concerned, the new National Electric Code requires whole house surge protectors for new builds so the prices are now dirt cheap. You can buy an 80,000 amp surge protector for $125 and just screw it onto a double pole breaker or directly onto the bus.

I understand what you're trying to imply, but that is such a poor analogy:

1. You're comparing an electronic device that can range from like $5 to $5,000 to the value of a life.

2. You have to pay more for extra joules of protection with a surge protector, but the seat belt in your car comes free of charge, AND you can't upgrade your seatbelt.

this is bare minimum surge protection at 200 joules. Do not plug in anything you would hate to lose.

I have never lost any either but I would rather be safe than sorry. By your logic, if a person has never been in a car accident, they should not wear a seat belt all of the time.

At least 1. During a storm, sometime 10 years+ ago, my motherboard got fried. PC was plugged to a surge protector too, but it was an old one.
