I tried multiple generic sport loop style bands and the velcro started to fail within 6-9months on multiple, to the point the watch almost fell off. I got an Apple version (also on clearance) and it's still going strong about 18months later. The $25 ends up being slicker and less expensive in the long run.
All bands that were for the larger of the two sizes for all gens are compatible: 42/44/45 mm
Same with the smaller of the two sizes: 38/40/41 mm
And if yours is the larger size of Series 7, it should be 45mm
(Also side note, I recently found out the smaller size bands will still work with the larger watch size, it just won't be flush on the left and right but it locks without issue in the middle)

Generic Apple Watch bands on Amazon run $5-10 and are almost identical

I have a 44 mm series 7. Can I use the ones listed as 42/44? I'm guessing no, but I thought there was some sort of overlap between the sizes?

I'd second this statement. Paid for generics and they were scratchy and got worn easily. The Apple version is softer and dries much more quickly. The generic version felt like wearing a wet rag after a good workout. These somehow absorb and don't feel nasty.

I used the sport loop included with my Series3 for four years until I got a new watch with the Milanese. First party sport loop is great. My only complaint is the new ones have too much color, essentially want black.
