These "naysayers" are speaking from a safety and code perspective, NEC and to protect the uneducated user.

I checked this out in the store. It appears to be reasonably well built. Anyone have experience with this?

Yes, I have it, and I use it exclusively to power my Greenworks 12 amp 20-inch lawn mower, and it works like a champ. My only complaint is that winding it up can be a little tricky. For that price I would grab it fast.

Yup, still using my two-pack from 2017. The head on one of the receptacle ends has detatched from the yellow jacket but the three conductors are still firmly attached. Theyre used for my pressure washer and dethatcher. I grabbed another SD for the orange wire reels.

This is still a good deal esp considering the cost of the reel with it receptacles. And no nay-sayers complaining that they cant power their chain saw/grill/heat pump/atom smasher because the gauge is too thin laugh out loud

This is a great deal - it's 12/3 versus the 14 or 16 AWG you normally find here, where "naysayers" are typically just trying to remind people that running a 50' run of speaker wire to power a toaster is probably a bad idea.

You and I know that - engineers always say regulations are written in blood. Others, not so much.

12 gauge is a nice touch if you're running a compressor or some higher draw power tools off a 20A garage outlet.

This is of better quality compared to Sam's Club's Masterplug extension cord. I have both.

That's my point. This is thick enough that it covers the 50' use case for probably the biggest possible loads on a 120v outlet...assuming the outside environment doesn't become a volcano.

And I wouldn't bet a red cent that people on SD ("naysayers" ) give unsolicited advice to strangers in the DIY space for the sake of "protecting" anyone...

to quote a PE colleague of mine "anyone who cites one single number in a specification and is claiming to be an expert is not to be trusted"

And I'm no expert. But I do run a 14amp pressure washer in 105 degree weather with two extension cords...

PE here - I can tell you with virtual certainty that the people cautioning others from doing stupid things with some of the purchases here (like power tools, extension cords, etc.) are doing so out of genuine concern for their well being. Some people are like that.

I can also tell you that none of those people claimed to be experts, so that quote is meaningless. I don't expect my electrician to be a PhD in physics to know that a 50' run of 12 gauge wire maxes out at 20A at most conditions. He doesn't need to be an expert, he just has to be able to read a basic chart.

Maybe if it's covered, but I wouldnt. I have this and there doesn't seem to be any waterproofing on the outlets.
