Just received an update on 6900 order that there's a supply shortage and they will send me updated shipping timeline. For the inconvenience they also applied a 5% discount to my order that will hit once the item ships.

ORDER UPDATE:

I ordered this about 3 or 4 hours after it was posted. The order went through without issue. However, I received an email the following day saying that my order was delayed and should ship within the next 30 days...

I figured that I didn't NEED it right away, so for the price, whatever... I contacted customer service anyway and they said it was out of stock due to the sale (as expected).

Yesterday I received an email stating that it had shipped and UPS tracking shows that it will be here on Thursday. I hoping some of the others received similar notifications and no one's order got canceled.

I forgot to use the rewards program for free expedited shipping, so it was free standard shipping.

UPS shows mine is only 60 miles away now. Very happy for that.

A somewhat related topic: What do we do with outdated chromebooks that are no longer getting updates? Just reset and drop off for recycling somewhere? Any other uses for it?

Looks like I'm a little late to the "mine shipped" game, but mine shipped!

I too received an email today that my order has shipped along with UPS tracking number!

ETA Wed. Aug 24th. I had placed my order on Aug 17 at 3:20pm (PDT). So stoked!
Update: Rec'd a "your package is on its way!" email yesterday at 4:01pm. UPS tracking says "on the way" with ETA Tomorrow, August 24 by 7:00 P.M.

You can unlock their write protection, flash their UEFI firmware, and install ChromeOS Flex (or any other OS of your choosing) on most.

ChromeOS Flex removes access to the Google Play Store, but would otherwise be identical to standard ChromeOS.

Would this make is more secure than just using it as is, with the original OS and no updates?

Yes; you would continue to receive ChromeOS updates, including security fixes, and potentially, performance improvements and other OS enhancements and features.

The trade-off is that you lose access to the Google Play Store, but you also open yourself to potential security vulnerabilities. How much risk you assume based on those potential vulnerabilities is subjective and everyone would need to assess their own comfort level.

Personally, given the option, I would install Flex on an EOL Chrome device if I intended to continue using it.
