I have had much better luck from Amazon! I select gift box option and my larger sets have always come with a form fitting box inside of another box. Maybe I'm just lucky?

I've done gift boxes for things from Amazon in the past, esp if they intend to mail it in the product box, but I'll have to check if that's an option when I'm ordering Lego in the future.
- Thought I'd add, in my case, it is sometimes carrier issues/how long they are in transit. I do most of my shopping on-line so I pretty regularly get boxes that are very damaged. With the bubble mailers, they are pretty much guaranteed to be damaged though.
