With fuel prices being what they are, every little bit helps. My next door neighbor just pulled the heads on his stock '08 5.3 Sierra and did the AFM delete at 120K miles, plus a mild cam, custom tune, new lifters, valve springs, and valve stem seals etc. A broken valve spring prompted the work, which I was surprised to see on an engine of that mileage.

Some GM owners run a little ATF in their engine oil (1/2 quart or so as a high detergent additive) to keep their lifter internals varnish free and prevent the lifter sticking problem, but I can't comment on the safety or effectiveness of that method.
I might try that before my next oil change. How much insurance coverage are you providing if it blows my motor? I hear BabyBubba insurance covers up to $12K in damaged. Thanks buddy!

Engines with less than 10k are dropping lifters. It's a terrible design especially with a plastic lifter tray. What's crazy is there's guys with 200-300k on an AFM engine and nary a problem...but other guys can drop lifters with almost brand new engine.

My brand new, 2021 GMC AT4 was diagnosed with a "bent" lifter.

The other day, I was rolling down the highway at about 50-60mph when I started hearing a clanking/knocking noise followed by some vibration. I took it easy getting it home as I had no idea what was causing it. I didn't drive it again until I took it in to the dealer. When I started it up, it began making the noise and vibrating again, even while idle in park.

They told my it was a "bent" lifter. Only have 9.5k miles on my truck. They are ordering me new parts, but I'm worried they're just gonna throw the same new factory lifters on there and I'll run into this same issue again.

YUUPPP!!!!

My buddys 11 sierra 1500 180K-Miles had a lifter go out and it started burning oil like a freight train between oil changes... AFM = USELESS.... Especially in a truck... It will be in v8 mode 99% of the time with any load or weight on it.

Where did your buddy get his cam and parts?
I think he shopped around and bought a mix of factory and aftermarket parts from several different vendors; he didn't say which ones.

The '08s (and late '07s, first run of these) were especially bad for damaging rings and cylinder walls with faulty AFM operation. GM bought a lot of warranty engines in those days until they fixed the problem, and high oil consumption was the symptom.

You're on your own with that; notice the disclaimer at the bottom of my message. I'm just sharing what I see others doing with this particular issue.

My '11 GM 5.3 runs like new with 122K on it, and consumes 1/4 to 1/3 of a quart of oil every 3K miles. A few hundred miles prior to my last oil change, I topped it off with 1/4 quart of synthetic ATF as a varnish treatment. Changed oil as usual with synthetic 5W30 (no ATF added with the new oil) and I'm rolling on. What you do with your engine is your choice and your responsibility.

To try to rope others into responsibility for your failures simply for participating in a discussion, is honestly kind of lame. Take the information for what it's worth to you, but check the whole threat thing.

Most engineers will tell you that 5w20 and 5w30 are essentially interchangeable. 5w20 may give ever-so-slighty higher mpg numbers. My Jeep Wrangler called for 5w30 a few years ago, then they changed it to 5w20 with the exact same engine. This was just to help improve mpg claims apparently. My manual does state that 5w30 is fine if 5w20 isn't available so that should tell you that the difference is negligible. I also like to use 5w30 in summer and 5w20 in winter.

NOTE: Mopar SAE 5W-30 engine oil approved to FCA
Material Standard MS-6395 such as Pennzoil, Shell Helix or
equivalent may be used when SAE 5W-20 engine oil
meeting MS-6395 is not available.

Like you said, at the risk of a debate. I just take the word of the team of engineers who built, designed, and tested my engine. They're a lot more educated, and paid a lot more than likely anyone else here. đŸ˜… me especially

That motor is stout and one of GM's best motors.... Ever.

There are plenty of other examples by Toyota 4.7l V8 and 3.0 v6 and 5.7l v8 that im sure see 10-20k interval oil changes and go will over 300k....

it really is the motor design here...
I've got a mid 70's Ford inline 6 300 CI. Going on 325,000 miles. Can't be killed.

The top of the thread says synthetic blend, but when you click on the link Grainger says conventional for the 5W30. So which is it?

My old ex brother-in-law has the same mileage on his V6 2001 F150. It's his daily driver. Not as peppy as it once was, but still pretty reliable. Good stuff.

Yeah, you know, the same ones who built Fords 3.5l and then told people to drill holes in bottom of inter cooler or get a longer dipstick for the 5.0 engines. Those engineers….LMAO

Still mulling the worth of this to me at least. Pretty good deal if this is good oil. But I have gotten Pennzoil Platinum full synthetic 5 qt jugs for 10-12 bucks after rebate too. For my 0W-20 option this big box is a tad cheaper but not crazy cheap
