The cheapest retail oil you can buy, Supertech from Walmart, is a good oil. So...

With it being DEXOS licensed and good quality base oils. Can we agree that this is SAME quality level of Warren distribution oil that makes oil for Walmart, Autozone, Mag 1 and most other auto parts retailers ?? IMO ONLY oil to worry about is the "No Name" generic oil from XXX dollar stores and some sketchy gas stations!!! Just for "tricks and kicks" I always look on the bottom of product for manufacture name and location.

I did for OKC and Dallas area pickup and says both 5W-30 blend and full syn are "Temporarily Unavailable For Purchase" ??????
Only 5W-30 available is conventional for almost the same price as full synthetic NO SPANKS !!!

Basic common sense is to re-use old 5qt oil jugs to get a good accurate fill. I use windshield fluid and 1 gallon water jugs for some of my leaky oil jugs........I'm looking at you Rotella gas and truck, Chevron delo 400 XLE !!

Decent amounts of moly, boron and zinc.

Also, the 5W-20 viscosity is knocking on 5W-30 territory, but with more 20% TBN (combustion acid neutralizers) and 2% lower volatility likely due to less VI's.

In laymen's terms, their synth 5W-20 is a damn good substitute for the sold out 5W-30… arguably a better oil.

My vehicle calls for 5-20 and has 177k on it. Uses about half a qrt between (7k ish) oil changes running full synthetic.

The full synthetic is, well...full synthetic. And the high mileage must have some sort of additive blend to help a more worn engine (snake oil, or...???). Negligible price difference. Soooo, kinda torn.

Get the full syn or the 'high mileage' syn blend?

I'd go with the full syn… it's simply a better lubricant.

The Duramax Full Synthetic is not a true synthetic? I keep coming back to this deal as it is an excellent price for synthetic oil but, I have trust issues around the quality of this oil. If what you saying is true, that sounds like enough for me to avoid this oil. At minimum, I would want this to meet the quality of supertech oil.

I saw the Realdyne truck pulling into Firestone today. I would guess that DuraMAX is the oil used for Firestone synthetic oil changes.

I dont have a link but kept paying attention to the two major ones. First one involved Castrol Syntec when they claimed to be better than Mobil 1 etc and what was considered "synthetic" came into question. Courts ruled that group III bases could be considered synthetic (99% of them are not and are based on mineral oil or petroleum) and labelled the same as a group IV or V synthetic base stock. At that point, most brands started making cheaper "synthetics" using the group III base stocks, which scientifically are considered semi synthetic.

A popular oil was the Mobil 1 euro blend which was considered true synthetic group IV and could be called that in countries like Germany which have stricter labelling requirements etc. Mobil 1 stopped making it and replaced the oil with a group III based oil which can not be called a true synthetic in Germany.

Well I should clarify, it's as much of a synthetic as Mobil 1 etc but the oil companies conned our legal system into allowing group III base oils to be considered synthetic (not synthetic) and just about all oil companies started making cheaper "synthetics" which are actually semi synthetic. So not slamming this oil per say

So this begs the question (to save some of us a bunch of research), which mainstream oils are true synthetic (V, IV?)?

And, how much does it really matter?
