Future proofing with gen4 is foolish. What future proofing? Gen5 is out, gen4 is done.

Besides the speeds are so similar that you can't even tell the difference unless you regularly transfer large files.

The only point to consider at this moment is when Microsoft's direct storage becomes more available. It's API only recently became available.

If it turns out that direct storage API needs pcie gen 3 nvme drives at minimum, nothing else will matter for gamers. This product will be a steal and elitists can fawn over higher giggerjibbers without any actual improvement.

My 250 GB Hynix SSD did a ton of writes (about 2880 GB) even though I have used it little and barely downloaded anything. I mostly did web browsing, Zoom calls, and a little bit of gaming. After checking the writes on CrystalDiskInfo, I decided to do some research about it. It seems Windows does a lot of writing automatically to the drive in the background with the current settings even when you do not download large files or notice it. The current settings are not very SSD friendly. This is even more so when you have low RAM and continuously use programs which use up all the available RAM, which forces the system to use the SSD as RAM. In addition to following these steps, consider expanding the RAM if possible and if you only have 8 GB or less like I do to reduce a lot of writes to your drive. Hibernation is also another culprit which does a lot of writes every time you put your computer to sleep which uses the SSD as RAM to preserve everything and the state of open programs.

Make sure you follow the steps on this article to make your SSD last longer by optimizing Windows settings:

https://www.cnet.com/tech/computi...-lifespan/

*(Scroll down to "What you can do" for the list of steps.")

IMPORTANT: If you decide to reduce or remove your Page File completely, make sure you have 16 GB RAM or more. I removed mine completely on a laptop of only 8 GB RAM and my system started hanging and freezing because it quickly filled up that much RAM and it could not use the SSD as temporary extended RAM. The more RAM you have, the less writes you do to your drive when your system needs it.

Hope this helps reduce the writing done to your drive and makes it last longer!

NICE, pcie4 variant almost definitely caused this. It's been a long, long time since I've seen storage drive price drops this significant!

Now the pcie5 is a thing, we might even see pcie4 drops when the pcie5 variant is released, hopefully sometime soon!

Same comment as I made for the 2TB deal on this:

Certainly the leader in Gen 3 (except for offshore warranty handling). Forced Samsung to update to Evo Plus to keep up.

But with Gen 4 sticks able to work in Gen 3 PCIE and with much faster flash memory, not sure this has an advantage without a more significant discount than this. Should be looking for clearance sales at this point.

Buying a Gen 4 now will be more future proof if you ever change your computer or motherboard.

I wish the reviewers would also measure the Gen 4 SSDs in Gen 3 boards to see what speeds they get.

It's been very close, if not this exact price, previously - but it is near a historic low, regardless.

I agree. No one will notice the difference in speed between any of the gen nvme.

PUNY SHITTY - SCUM OF THE OTHER BRANDS - I may not have captured all the good qualities of this crappy company. . Avoid them like hell. Buy only Hynix, Crucial, Samsung, Kingston - maybe WD/SD as their warranty has become a nightmare lately.

I have this drive, I also have a 500 GB version of this drive, I'm a big fan of this model. It just works, it's fast.

But the big thing, is the random 4k read write speeds is what makes this drive great, it's quite a bit faster than many of the other competing drives that are out there in its class.

Some pci express gen 4 drives are surprisingly slower in the random 4k speeds. Sk hynix pci gen 4 drive is actually even faster than this one in the 4k file sizes.

The reason why I bring up 4K file sizes, because that's exclusively what you feel, that's what determines how fast your computer boots up, that's what determines how fast programs load, the faster that number the snappier your computer feels, it doesn't matter if your drive can write data at 500mb or 5 terabytes, that doesn't determine how snappy your computer is

Anything from PNY, should be $40 max. I bought several of their cheap SSDs, it's surprisingly slow, in every possible way. I will say it's not the absolute worst drive out there, but it's competing for worst drive, that's a category to not try to win.

Added one of these to a Zen 3 Ryzen laptop which only supports up to Gen 3 anyway. Flawless installation, and a very fast, cool running drive. Paid $5 more than this for it and no regrets.

The best thing I can say about a 1TB PNY drive for $70.....is it's putting pressure on the better drives like this Hynix to cut their prices as well. Same thing seems to be happening with Samsung as well. Wasn't that long ago you were paying $100 for this drive.

If the computer you are using is your work's livelihood, then it's no brainer to spend the $16 extra bucks on this bad boy. PNY would be fine for that extra computer in your house that your 12 year old plays Minecraft on.

Not really. next gen CPUs on PCIe5 will only have limited slots for Gen 5 (one x16 slot or 2 x8 slots) and rest will be Gen 4 slots. Multiple SATA slots will be replaced by multiple Gen 4 slots for peripherals. There would be no reason to upgrade to Gen 5 storage in the near future. More likely used for next gen Graphics cards.

So Gen 4 will be here for a while. Memory controllers will improve to make better use of the Gen 4 speeds and games will start to utilize not just the bandwidth but also low latency in Gen 4 as they use faster NANDs, architectures and/or clocks.

So, I totally disagree with you on the future proofing with Gen 4 instead of Gen 3 at the moment. Gen 4 running on PCIE 3 will also have less of a slow down in sustained writes and faster average speeds because of lower latency.

The difference between Gen 3 and Gen 4 storage is not that much to justify Gen 3, even the best of them.
