This game is good but way too overrated so don't fall for the reviews. The controls are deliberately clunky (ex: example being rooted with long enough recover time to get countered to death after finish every attack combo). Enemies are intended for frustration without anything to deal with (ex: flying enemies that most attacks/skills can't reach, while almost no air options. Boss burst spamming hitting the whole screen).

The "fix" for the bad are strategically hidden away so people will be like "this game is amazing!" after they learned of it. For example, holding R2 + moving facing direction after attacking to "unroot" yourself. All decent skills to locked till end game when you've already beaten the game.

It's a decent JRPG if you are in need of one. It is built from an old battle paradigm and feels a bit clunky to play today, though. As far as Tales games go, I'd suggest Arise or even Berseria first if you haven't played those, simply because they play much more smoothly today.

To add, it's called manual cancel and appears in the game manual fairly early on. It's a deliberate mechanic where you can combo infinitely as long as you mash a rather awkward and unpleasant button combo between each attack. There's no nuance missing here; it's just "mash buttons at the end of attack to continue". I found myself using it less simply for hand fatigue. Also, yeah, the game is one of those that doesn't want you to play at the highest difficulty setting until new game plus, where it's pointless anyway because it hands out ridiculous power via the Grade Shop. If you do start on a high difficulty, everything is a ludicrous health sponge, so I certainly can't recommend trying.

I recently picked this up and I'm currently 30 hours in. This one is not as great as Tales of Symphonia. The characters are annoying, especially in battle, but luckily you can turn off combat dialog. It's still fun and definitely worth the $8.

Playstation is notorious for keeping extremely elevated msrp and "normal prices.

One of the best Tales games. If you like JRPGs I highly recommend it.
