I'm a bit behind on building computers and understanding matching parts but wondering if this may work in my new-to-me Alienware R12 w/ i7 CPU?

Hmmm, it looks like DDR4, 3400MHz, Unbuffered, 288 pin, Dual Rank, 1.25V is what works in the R12. I didn't even realize desktops can use DDR5 memory now. I still wonder if this is compatible if I put 2 sticks of this or probably not good to run them in the same box.

my guess, unlikely. very very few motherboards can support both ddr4 and ddr5. so in your case, you need ddr4 Smilie

Thanks Iconian, I suspected that after googling it doesn't support DDR5. I just got my system earlier this year and there's already machines that use DDR5? EEK!

The only reason to buy ddr5 is that you have no other choice. Ddr4 offers the best value by a long shot.
