Seems like a great budget option for RVs and emergency home backup for essentials (w/ some overhead). It's hurricane season and I'm tired of being in the dark.

By far the cheapest dual fuel, portable, quiet generator in the ~3000w range that I've found from a somewhat reputable brand. Hopefully refurbished means "someone who knows what they're doing ironed out any major issues".

Past Costco deals for this model were $629 (in 2020) and $699 (in 2021). Current Costco deal for a similar unit - W02981 (not dual fuel or electric start) is $549 https://www.costco.com/.product.100367440.html.

Costco recent deals on WH03242 were $599 to $649. The WH02942 deals were more than a year ago.

Haven't found the WH03242 deal but yeah the past deals on the WH02942 were a while ago - $629 in Jan-20 and $699 in Sep-21. Prices on a lot of this stuff have gone up.

Wish I'd seen this https://www.costco.com/.product.100367440.html before posting, just for accuracy's sake - $549 for the W02981, similar to the W02942 but without dual fuel or electric start. Still a good deal, and worth it for some just to have the Costco return option.

For my purposes and budget I'm pretty thrilled with the WH02942 deal, but I might add the W02981 to the main post.

Ha that's what I was thinking. I've spent the last few weeks deep diving on what we need, want, and can budget. Within those parameters this is by far the best recent deal I've found.

Now time to prep for a natural gas hookup... It'll lose some power but I think we could've gotten by with a smaller unit anyways, and I could never stock enough gas/propane to get through a week without power like after Hurricane Harvey and Ike.

Sure you can.

You're not gonna be running 24x7 unless trying to run some ac or heat, etc and in that case you're gonna need a big generator this won't cut it and yeah large amount of gas. Better go whole home there, those gens are generally made for continuous duty. I know people who've done that for a week with big gas gen and it's just loud as heck and a constant hunt for gas.

If your house is not all electric and you're not trying to cool or heat it uses very little electric assuming you're on led. All of my big energy (which would normally be 240v loads in an electric houses) runs of LP when the storm hits i'm cooking, i'm drying, i'm heading water. Thus except for couple items (pumps, etc for whcih there are work arounds for) i can use an inverter (though i do have a regular gen to run emergency 240v load if needed)

I've got 3 bbq tank lp, and 4 nato cans (plan on expanding both).

I calculate even with 1/2 runtime which is too much i'm at around 11 days.

I have an LP tank buried but don't see a need to tap into that and it's not a monster size anyways i'd have to have to run a whole home. You can use some common sense and only need modest power supply<blockquote>https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nqP9tbW0sZ0&t=224s</blockquote>

keep the inverter to run ac at night , security lights, security system, and charge fan batteries, etc. If you have big wattage appliances stoves etc not on gas you gotta have backup hotplates, toaster ovens, etc Add up your critical circuits, put in something like a protrans switch just for those and i think you'll find you have very minimal requirements.

NG hookup is a very good way of doing it. I left out hookup when was putting gas line through the house and very happy about it. I did use bigger generator since I am on the well and converted it to NG myself (drilled carb) Now the only issue is pulling it from the shed and hooking up so need to build some storage box near hookup point. One thing is solved though - the gas problem. Which could not be found anywhere during prolonged electric loss.

Runs everything in the house but AC and electric dryer.

Ha we're pretty tight on space....like 80% lot coverage & barely fitting two cars in the garage, inner city type of thing (hence quiet being a priority, because I plan to run it regularly). I've thought about just getting a 40-60lb propane tank and rationing it.

I've seen estimates for this model of ~19 hours runtime on 20lbs, so with a larger tank I could probably stretch it a week or so...really the main concerns are fridge, charging devices, and fan/heater, but having the NG line just seems to eliminate the day 4/5 anxiety of "do I start siphoning my car or go look for propane". Plus I do all my grilling w/ lump and wood, so I'd never get any other use out of propane.

So many decisions. Thanks for al in the input!

There are a lot of youtube videos documenting the steps, some for this model specifically, but I have a lot more to learn before I start giving instructions. Also some of the videos are kind of sketchy so just keep learning until you get the basics, then choose what works for your setup.

If you already have a gasoline-only generator, there are often kits that will convert it to tri-fuel (gas, propane, natural gas). Tri-fuel kits aren't as common for dual fuel generators, but overall it's not a huge project..

That's fair, it was a good deal if it's what you needed for $200 more when it was still available.

I've been looking for the dual fuel / inverter style generator. These are about $800+ for a Champion. Good pricing, but the Labor Day 15% has expired. Thanks for sharing this deal.

This is $450 now with coupon code COUNTDOWN22. Are these refurbished units any good in terms of quality and longevity?
