Check for eligibility here (requires your utility account number):
https://e-rebates.org/masssave_tstat
If you're eligible, select your store. Instant rebate will pop up as barcode. (I did it on computer and emailed a pdf copy of the coupon to my phone.)
Go to store, get thermostat. At checkout, scan thermostat, then scan instant rebate like it's a coupon.
Most in-store energy star smart thermostats are eligible. Currently Home Depot, Best Buy, and others have
Nest Smart Thermostat [homedepot.com] (link for reference only) for $99 as a Labor Day sale. I paid $1 OTD (not entirely sure why, but whatever), and it took about 2 minutes from start to finish. At my store, they had a display next to the thermostats with a QR code that'll take you to the above rebate link.
You can do it up to three times per year. This offer is only available to Massachusetts residential customers of Cape Light Compact, Eversource, National Grid, Unitil, Berkshire Gas, Liberty Utilities and Blackstone Gas Company. It cannot be combined with any other utility offer.
I am not sure if, like some previous similar offers, you need to start using it within a few months and opt-in to the program where they can tweak your settings during high usage times. I didn't see such a thing mentioned in the T&C.
