Nothing wrong with freeze packs.

An alternative that I have found works pretty well is a simple Home-Made pack.

Fill a disposable, plastic water bottle with water to about the 75-80% mark.
Mix in about a teaspoon of salt. Then freeze the bottle.

The most expensive part of this is the salt...as the bottle was likely going to be trash anyways.
Because you did not totally fill the bottle with water, there is room for expansion when it freezes.
The salt allows the bottle to freeze at a lower temp and allows the bottle to be more effective.
And if the bottle were to be punctured in the cooler, it is salt water and not toxic.
Plus...it is usually easy to source the materials to make as many of these as you want.
Also found freez pak on sale at Walmart for $1.07 if you need it alittle taller and sooner. Also large is also on sale.

Yes, and nobody wants to be forced to enter a Walmart - let alone to buy a $1 ice pack. The deal here is that Amazon matched the price with free Prime shipping.

Good post OP.

Walmart all day every day at basically the same price. No need to rush on getting ice packs to save 9 cents.

This has been the regular price at Walmart for a long time.

For true long term ice packs, look into "Thermosafe Polar Pack" - basically used by companies when shipping medication to people. Stands the test of time and in some cases, a hot car for a full day! (Note: only the bottom of my cooler was "cool" after 8 hrs in the sun, in a car trunk, and these foam bricks need to be taken care of, otherwise it leaks this weird gel thing.)

Ice pack* is singular if the deal is only for one.

Walmart has curbside pickup. I barely ever enter the store.

amex gives monthly statement credit equivalent to the walmart+ membership cost.
