I am curious about how many years running shoes can actually last. A lot of online sources suggested a pair of running shoes last about 300 to 500 miles before cushion is worn out. If I just run 3 miles per day on average, they only last less than a year, right? What did I miss here?
Back to the Air Zoom Pegasus 38 in OP, I am wondering if the extra cushion will help relieve joint pain, so can a man get a women model? It seems the black color is unisex.

Serious runners go through at least several pairs per year. So the mileage of the shoes is about right with YMMV. Man can get a women's model but sometimes women's will be narrower even when the length of both shoes are the same. Men 8 is women 9.5 BTW.

Yes the foam cushioning breaks down from repeated heavy strikes to the ground.
They can still be worn but then your joint will be the ones taking on any added stresses from ground striking.
I go through at least 3 pairs per year. I just rotate though. I use a pair for training and then when they hit 300ish mes to relegate them to daily walking duty. Then use a new pair for running. Then when I swap again, I take the walking pair and make them for yard work.
They generally look almost new until I start yard work with them.
I then have a different pair for 5k races so that they stay fresher for a longer period of time.
I never run in my walking shoes as the rubber underneath starts to wear away with the higher mileage.
My suggestion if you have leg /joint pain would be to take your existing sneakers to a running store and have them suggest a pair. (I bought a pair or two from them to help them out) but then I usually just stick with what works and buy whenever the old models are getting clearanced out -like these pegasus 38s. Great shoe for my style of movement and reasonable .
