Depends on what you need to camera to do for you .. for me, I need the security aspect ..

For me the key parts are:

Security Camera System Minimal Viable Product requirements:
1) It must be Reliable.
2) It must be able to capture good enough images to potentially ID suspects.
3) It must be useful for evidence. [ thus date and time stamps are critical ]

Prior to the pandemic and supply chain mess up we were seeing deals on 8MP 1/1.8" sensor model cameras.

While not as good as a 4MP 1/1.8" sensor camera in low light - they were in general better than the 1/2.5" 8MP sensor models ..

If you want more MP .. and low light performance, the price goes up significantly for many of us. ( if you're here in the Reolink thread, the 8MP 1/1.2" cameras will probably break your allocated piggy bank .. )

In general, 8MP security cameras that are currently sold to us consumers now have smaller sensors, and they have added some small LED lights to make up for a cheaper sensor. Blah .. bait and switch I say ..

Right now, it is super challenging to find cameras that are on budget and with larger sensors .. if you're looking for particular model numbers and reviews, do go to ipcamtalk and look for various posts by key members there.

Granted the smaller sensors here with reolink I have set my own expectations when I reviewed the cameras for what I want and these have fit the bill quite nicely. All poe and wifi setup with several UPS connected to the NVR and the POE switch gets me several hours of recording time when power goes out which is rarely. I have very good unifi WiFi and several WiFi cameras on backup power with 75days uptime and that was I updated firmware.

The rest of POE are mounted with limited night vision in mind and work just fine. So is their better? Sure there is always better but at a much higher cost. Again know the limitations and set your expectations and you'll be happy.

If a car pulls in my driveway the camera is able to see the license plate. So yes if the camera is 30ft+ away good luck but everyone's situation is different and after having hiccups with the setup I recommend buy the NVR and cameras individually.

If you're worried about privacy with always connected cameras don't use them inside and have on separate vlan.

Otherwise reliability wise I have not had issues with my camera's in middle of winter or heat of summer but they are mounted under the eaves and not in direct elements.

Anyone looking for a quality setup, don't save money on the hardware. You'll spend more money and effort in pulling cable and mounting you're not going to want to upgrade frequently.

Lorex nocturnal systems are very nice for the money. Large sensors, encoding, metal housings, and 30fps. I frequently have customers disappointed at video quality of moving objects, cars in particular, that appear blurry when moving. That's what you'll get with a 15/20fps camera. Regardless of resolutions, the higher framerate is what most people notice and want.

could you entertain me and suggest some cams anyway? I've tried navigating ipcamtalk multiple times, and i dont know if it's me, but the information there is so convoluted. I can never find a definitive answer, just more of, here this camera that does this, here's that camera that does that, all these cameras suck, etc.

models would be great

So far all the Reolink cameras I have seen use more affordable and smaller sensors and do not do well in low light conditions

Looking for good 4K with optical zoom to add to my QNAP. Previously used Hikvision. What brands do you recommend that have larger sensors (I'll separately check QNAP compatibility).

I've had several coax/DVR all in one kits over the years, quality was low but got what I considered fair value out of them and they were good enough. Replaced a camera now and then for $25. I moved and left my setup behind. Now I want to up the ante and looking for a "good" 6 camera NVR setup in the $600-800 range. I look, read forums and comments like in this thread, get immediately overwhelmed with options and pricing and end up buying nothing. Repeat about every 3 months. Smilie

I guess it comes down to something I can't decide. Balance of absolute need to identify or just need to see what is/was going on at any given time. I live rural and not much going on. Set it and forget it, pull it up and review infrequently.

Reolink cameras as great - I have two of these cameras as stand-alone if any questions I can answer for anyone.

And usually untold is how great the mobile app, it's amazing. So many options and features if you want. And that's coming and helping friends with Revo, Arlo, Eufy, Ring and Lorex systems where their app is very basic, almost old school, the Reolink is great for power users. It's constantly being updated too with new features - just check out the app version history in your iOS or Android app store to see what I mean, and firmware releases for the camera itself.

One call out for anyone new into researching home security cameras. Any negative reviews for any camera company are usually about two things: battery life and wifi signal. This is why I went with PoE cameras to avoid both down sides. Once you read reviews about wired cameras, the reviews lean positive. Depends on what's possible in your home of course, but poe is worth the effort and add wifi cameras where it's a must.

I'm really considering switching out of the nest ecosystem to probably eufy. I have all Nest Iq cameras - 3 indoor and 1 outdoor in that I still have new in the packaging and might sell due to how much they are selling for. This would fund the new eufy cams. The cams tend to constantly lag in The app which drives me crazy. The specs on the IQ cams are really good and you would think produce a really high quality picture. Does anyone have first hand experience on why eufys or others would produce better results than all neat cam IQs?
