Was curious what some of the reviews said about the lumens. Seems to be somewhere between 300-400.

Product advertises 2000 lumens with an XM-L T6 LED Chip, but under optimal conditions won't do anywhere near 2000 or even 1000.

I see that this is one of those flashlights that can adapt to using 3 AAA batteries or one 18650 battery. I haven't read the reviews, but I assume the complaints about low power are from people who didn't know that to get 2,000 lumens, you need to buy the 18650 battery. AAA batteries won't get you the higher output, and unfortunately, the description does say that they do NOT include the better battery.

Interesting. Clearly this will likely never reach 2000 lumens, but in your experience would it get closer with 18650s? Think I'm going to have to try that.

Didn't the Cree T6 LED come out over a decade ago? I remember reading that the max output was 1,000 lumens when it first came out. There are hundreds of YouTube reviews that show that if you use an 18650 battery, it will hit near the max output of the LED. This flashlight is most likely similar to all the other generic brand flashlights that support both AAA and 18650, so I do not doubt that it will be much brighter if you use the higher output battery.

I wouldn't consider this a deal since Amazon always has flashlights that include the 18650 batteries for $10 or less. They are usually no-name brands from China, but isn't that the same with this deal? But with this deal, you have to buy the 18650 batteries separately, which doubles or triples the cost in the end.

Do these typically use unprotected 18650s or protected (nipple on the positive end) ones?
I have 18650s left over from some vape gear and am curious if I can use those.

Protected or not doesn't usually matter for the light or device using it. The protection circuit is mostly to protect the battery itself from things like overcharging or drawing damaging amounts of current.
