For those of us who don't know anything about Pokemon Are these better than the Costco deals? Which ones are the best ones to get amongst the best buy choices?

Just figure out the price per booster and buy the cheapest option for most cards if you're just collecting. Smilie

I was looking for deeper insight... ie, Someone in the Costco thread mention getting a specific type because there are better chances of getting cards. Something additional more to get the kids excited?

If you're trying to gamble then go spend money at Costco, there's a $400 card possibly. But still its a huge gamble. Or get $3/pack here and still have a chance for rare cards and more packs to open.

are you buying as a gift for someone else then ?

If its a gift then how old is the person you'd give to ?

Broadly speaking younger kids are just happy with a pile of cards and so the more packs the better. Chances of getting a high end card is always there and really they usually just look for high HP cards without consideration of real play strategy. What I've seen is the elementary school age kids don't even know how to play the game and just trade cards based on highest HP or play a version of war with them (draw and higher HP wins). This age kid might talk a lot about how this card is good or better etc, but they typicaly just look at HP which isn't really the best or only measure of card use. Theres exceptions, some kids under 10 know how to play but if they do they are unlikely to grasp strategy too much.

If the kids are middle age or older then they might play the game for real. If they are active players of the actual game and build actual decks then they may care more about specific kinds of cards. that case would probably require input from a serious Pokemon player to say whats up with current card offerings.

YMMV, just what I've observed from my kids and others around here.

What's the 400$ card from Costco out of curiosity?

I'm not necessarily looking to gamble but finding the most value (price) for the money. I know at the end of the day it's pretty much like lottery.

The Costco deal is for a set called Evolving Skies, which has a bunch of Eveelution cards, including an Umbreon card that is an alternate full art card (called the Moonbreon) card. That set has pretty poor pull rates for the sought-after cards but is among the most popular set for collectors.

Thanks for the info... What are the sets a booster packs that gives the best pull rate? Is there a website that explains all this for the dummies? Which few amongst the Best buy product is "the best" (I've got mixed kids so the best men's and the most valuable card and also the coolest looking card with the most hit points)

Evolving Skies. By far the most popular set right now with some of the highest cost rare/chase cards.

Astral Radiance is not a popular set but the pull rates are pretty good for the rare cards. The Elite Trainer Box is part of this sale at $30 and gives you 8 packs plus a bunch of other goodies. A booster pack is typically $4 each so 8 packs in the elite trainer box alone is a good deal if you don't particularly want a specific set.

The packs in the ETBs are all Astral Radiance set cards. Some of the other items on sale here gives you a mix of packs from different sets.

I guess voice dictation mangled the sentence pretty badly... "Best hp and art"

That brings up another topic. I see cheaper prices on AliExpress. I assume those are definitely fakes?... Including the booster boxes for 15 or $20? Are these fakes pretty much indistinguishable from the real thing and requires a professional to make an assessment? Or any kid can take a 10-second glance and tell you to stay away? I'm wondering if this route is the way to go for the little one that just likes the pictures.
