shipping weight of a mid-tower and monitor could easily be 49 pounds... last one i shipped was a microatx tower (only) that weighed-in at just under 30

how about excluding the monitor?
would 49 pounds be reasonable?
im worried because I have a desktop being shipped to me but UPS states that it only weights 17 pounds.

Where did you get 49 lbs?

17 lbs seems a bit light - would help to know what size desktop it is though. 30 lbs seems good for a normal mid-tower, so 17 might be reasonable for a HTPC, for instance.

Is this the computer from Ascendtech?

EIther way, I can see the components (excluding the case and power supply) adding up to 7 pounds, but the case and power supply alone could weight 17 pounds. It is possible they mis-weighed the shipment and or billed it incorrectly. I would just wait until you get it.

17 pound shipping weight isn't totally unreasonable for a tower only with lower-end case and power supply, and apparently, no optical drive, according to your parts list.. especially if they go cheap on packing and ship it out in the original case box. every system i ship is triple boxed (case is double boxed, and a third holds that plus kb, mouse, cd's, etc), which adds to the shipping weights i see here (that, plus i don't use $15 cases or power supplies)...

They might have some deal cut out with UPS and entered a lighter weight than it truly is. I know when I shipped many boxes at Fedex for moving, the person at the counter was nice and knocked off half the weight on the boxes. Smilie

Nah - just paying attention to your threads. Actually, the original thread of yours caught my eye, but as I recall the reseller ratings on the firm were pretty good. I wouldn't worry too much about it until you receive it. UPS is not really known to make mistakes weighing them as the company actually will enter the weight of the item. Recently it seems as though they have begun billing by size more than anything. It is possible for everything to weigh 17 pounds, but who knows.

Not a big deal..UPS screws up on weight on their tracking ALL THE TIME. I had a game coming from Amazon (collector's edition) that was max 3lbs, but UPS said it weighed 19lbs laugh out loud

It really depends. My old Gateway tower definitely tipped past 30 lbs, and I'd have sworn it was more.

17 pounds sounds reasonable, if it's a cheap case. The old Gateway felt like its case was made of some heavy crap.

I just bought my parents a Lenovo from a recent frontpage deal, it weighed 20 pounds. 17 sounds pretty light but it's not impossible.
