At this point most of the people who wrote those early games are dead and the publishing companies that own the rights aren't even hosting the data online, some third party is doing it for them. Just seems like they ought to exist in some free-to-play digital gaming archive or something.
Phantasy Star came out in 1987. The people who worked on it would have been in their 20s and 30s. The lead programmer, Yuji Naka - aka the creator of Sonic the Hedgehog - is only 57. These old games are already close to free - they've become cheaper than a bag of chips.
The later games in the series are free supported by ads on mobile devices, but they have no improvements other than savestates, so you'd be playing that old game exactly as it was back then.
