Here is another bike on clearance for $98 free s/h (was 398).

Men's 27.5" Decathlon ST100 [walmart.com]

I realize this is not the same level of the original post but good deal for a bike.

LOL at thumbs down. Some people will down anything…

"You've saved $10 with WOWFRESH promo code"

Amex Everyday Bluecash supposedly 3% for online orders, YMMV if this counts for pickup...

In for one. I bought a bike for $20 that needed work yesterday....so that's backburner now LOL.

I wouldn't worry about the BB height holding you back at all. You just have to be aware of potential pedal strikes (as on any MTB off-road) and that can be mitigated through trail awareness and technique.

It's more of a preference thing for me as I jump between bikes a lot.

Also, the importance of a dropper really comes into play for more aggressive riding and/or steeper terrain. If you're not doing that type of riding, then it's not all that important of a factor at this stage.

A lot of the discussion around this bike is a bit of "splitting hairs " about various features/specs which vary in importance depending on how folks will use this bike and the level of riding you'll do.

Try to keep that in mind as you digest everyone's comments. There is a wide range of experience, use cases, and expertise being shared, so opinions are going to vary as well.

Again, helluva bike for the price - if it fits you well.

Hey, i'm 5'11 and 32 inseam so the bike feels great but i'm at the minimum of having it fit me. I noticed the high seat post and how a dropper would not do much for me but i'm not yet familiar with how much lower that seat can be on a similar bike and can live with it at the price.

What worries me is the low bottom bracket as I only tried it in the city so far. It sounds like a big compromise out on the trails. Would you say this would be a liability while riding if it's so low. I had a schwinn full suspension years back with an old geo and 26 tires and I remember having issues getting around rocks in the trail because of the geometry on that bike. I had to jump over them. Riding a 29er feels like you can power over anything when I tried going into a construction site near me but everything was flat enough that I didn't notice that low bb being an issue 😩

I don't have any hands-on experience with the Ardor so I'd defer to the YouTube reviewers like KevCentral, Wolftick, etc who have done testing and builds on that platform.

That being said, getting a rideable, upgradabie MTB with a 1x for $350 seems like a good value.

In addition to the YT sources, maybe check out the Budget Bike Riders group on Reddit for lots of experience and comments on this level of bike:

I got the axum but as you pointed, sizing felt off. What do you think about the Mongoose Ardor X1? It's $120 more than this deal but I tried it in the store and felt much better. I'm just getting into MTB so feel like the ardor would hold me over until I'm serious and start going to trails.

I'm 5"8' would this work for me? Concerned that this is too big of a bike for me... If this were the medium, I would be all over this..
Posted this earlier (as a 6' man): I wouldn't buy this bike unless you are 5' 10" or taller..

Hm, which one is better for 6.0 - L or XL? Both show 6.0 as boundary)
XL. I am 5'11" and got XL. For casual ride here and there. Very comfortable. Handles not wide so that's a downside. Easy install. Only front wheel, seat and pedals need to install.

I think that's the same guy that was raving about what a great geometry the Axum has, and then he goes and radically changes it. Weird.
I made it slacker for black trails downhill because I was riding with hardcore MTBers who spent 2.5-3k on their builds. I also said in the same post I regret the decision and would have gone with a shorter non-boost fork and used the stock tires because climbing and speed suffered and we all ended up using our full suspension bikes more on downhills since we rarely hit those hardcore trails now and no matter how much you spend on a hardtail, a full suspension will still outperform it on black trails. The Axum stock was the fastest at climbing and overall speed than all my other MTBs that cost more.

Just a word of advice that the Schwinn Axum is an all-around bigger bike and a much better fit for someone that's above 6 feet than the Rockrider. I ordered and built both a large ST100 and the Axum, and the ST100 is fairly small for what is claimed to be a large size.

I'm 5'11 and the geometry of the frame makes it feel like a tight fit for me. It felt small. But I'm used to 26 inch wheeled bikes and not 29ers with this newer geometry. On the other hand, the Axum feels slightly big for me and I can only assume that anyone over 6 feet would feel right at home.

Also the amount of bike you are getting for $130 more is just out of this world. Every single part of the ST100 feels like a budget build, the selling price for that one is $150-200 rather than the list price. The red frame is awesome though and it's very smooth and light. The Axum just feels like a different grade of bike. Everything is metal, from the pedals, the brake handles (both plastic on the ST100), the quality of the frame, the paint, it feels like a more expensive bike from the way it rides and it takes bumps, and this is just on the street. I haven't taken it to any trails near me.

Don't get me wrong the ST100 is a sweet bike and it handles well, came out of the box shifting and braking smoothly, but it felt small for me only because the Schwinn is so large and is a bike that I can take on trails right away. The Axum I feel I can throw it down a hill and it is more likely to survive, at the expense of being a bigger bike. (more cumbersome to store in my car and my place w/no garage Wave)
Is Axum a good bike for riding around the neighborhood or is it too heavy compared to st100?
Would it be faster than the ST100?

Thanks. Did you select the no rotor option or did you get new rotors too?
No rotors. As others have mentioned, you can use the stock Axum rotors with the new brakes.

Oh no - may be missing couple of screws. Mine does not have the stem pinch bolts (page 19, figure 3.5, bullet #4). Are these found elsewhere or were they preassembled on other bikes.

Any idea how to get replacements from Schwinn? I can probable get some temporary ones at the hardware store.

I used one of the other bolts on the handlebars to use as a pinch bolt so I could take the Axum for a ride. Probably haven't ridden a bike it 25 years when we took the kids camping. I'm 5'10" and maybe have a inch+ clearance to the frame. I have to tilt the bike over a bit so I can swing my leg over the seat (Ha - hopefully this will get better as I get into better shape). I did cut a couple inches off the seat tube but it's more comfortable ride a little higher. The bike rides fantastic! I like the easy shifting and disk brakes compared to my old cheaper bikes.

The Axum is a much better deal and will provide a cushier ride with its big tires and the fork (front shock) and brake much better with the disc brakes. The ST100 will have more road-oriented gearing (may or may not be faster depending on the rider) but will have a rougher ride and brake weaker.

If it fits my size and my plan is to completely upgrade everything slowly is it worth doing on the Axum frame?

Im very skeptical about the Walmart and Schwinn as my main bike but would be interested in hearing the thoughts. My budget is $800 so if that helps
Check my earlier post, Axum with upgrades can do black trails and bike park. But yeah limited potential for black trails (not bike park since they're usually blue trails and the Axum can do jumps), it's an XC frame not a trail frame

Not sure, this is the set I bought off of eBay and it was a direct bolt minus adding the washers up front for space.

Interesting. I bought from the same seller and just installed the calibers. I had no trouble with fitting the front but I did have issues with fitting the rear calipers. The mount tabs on the factory parts are thicker than on the Shimanos. Looking at the threaded holes it looks like they just weren't well tapped and thus the original screws didn't want to go deeper than they were with the original calipers. I addressed this by chasing the threading with a M6x10 tap. After running the tap into the hole I was able to fit the calipers with the stock bolts. I will note that I did this because I didn't have enough washers on hand. It was the "correct" fix but a few washers between the bolt head and the caliber ear is easier Big Grin

BTW, the Shimano MT200s are a BIG upgrade. I found the stock brakes to be inferior to the direct pull brakes on my older bikes. Yeah, disc brakes are better when it comes to things like mud and wet since they can stay dry even when your tires don't. However, these were just really lousy calipers. Perhaps they need grease or something or better pads. I likely will never know since the MT200s were under $55 and work SO much better.

I haven't ridden the ST100 but I found the Axum brakes to be one of the weakest parts of the bike. For dry, "clean" riding I felt the brakes were inferior to those on the two 90s mtbs I've got in the garage. I really was quite disapointed with the factory parts. I will grant I didn't spend much time trying to bed them. Instead I spent $55 to get a set of MT200's off ebay. Well worth it with only mild install headaches. I have ridden other bikes with good mechanical disc brakes and I don't know why these felt so much worse than other examples I've tried.

The tires on this can handle sand

They're Tektro Aries clones, prob just needed to bed them - I've taken them to the bike park and survived (no crashes) but yeah I switched to a TRP Spyke up front a couple months ago and even that was a huge upgrade but I did ride the stock ones for like 8 months on blue and black trails lol. MT200s are even better, I'm debating putting some XTs I have from my Ebike on or mt200s I have on my Polygon D7 (mt200s are really good even at the bike park) since I have some 4-piston SRAM I got cheap from a friend.
