I wear almost exclusively Xero Genesis, DIYs, and Bedrock Cairns from about March through October. I've got some "casual" Whitins (not the VFF-looking ones) and a pair of Xero Hanas for cooler weather. I've been eyeing the Mesa Trails for my cold-weather backpacking shoe and at $41 (after $5 shipping), it's worth a shot. I'm nervous about the fit, though, since they appear to run small. I'm a pretty consistent EU43 / US10, but I went with US11 in the Mesa Trail. Hopefully they're not too big.

Xero's return/exchange policy isn't as great as they claim. Returning them will cost you $10 and you don't get your original shipping refunded. You don't really "exchange", either: you have to place a new order and after that, they'll give you a prepaid label for returning the first pair and will refund the first purchase + shipping. What if you can't (or don't want to) place another order because they're out of stock? Too bad, send 'em back for a refund less $15.

Bought the Terraflex from the last sale and have been fairly happy with them. Bought the mesa trail this time around. I like the fit and grip of my merrell trail glove 5s a hair better but they're no long being made and the 6s are terrible so these seem like a worthwhile replacement so far

Been wondering about this whole "barefoot" thing lately and everything in my size that isn't $80+ on sale is sold out… and with the comment about their "return/exchange" policy costing you $15 and the smallish sizing it sounds like I'm going to have to go in-store somewhere to get the fit right.

Any brands or specific stores (REI?) in the Midwest that might have a variety of options?

Got two pairs each under $30. Hope they fit longer than their sandals.

REI has Xero and some select Vivobarefoot options (I believe Bedrock too if you want hiking sandals) Given the return policy, they're a good first trial option since you can put some miles on them and still make a return.

Vivobarefoot direct also has a 100 day return policy including return shipping. That's a good options too.

Amazon Whitins and LRuns are a good cheap entry as well, won't last as long but at $40 or less great way to see if you like the style.

PS go slow if you switch over, don't hurt yourself.

Gah! The website is such a pain to navigate. Wish there was a filter for shoe size

Would the barefoot design go well with orange superfeet? I have plantar fasciitis and the doc has recommended Orange Superfeet. Thanks.

Not a doc so don't want to give medical advice but using insoles would go against the philosophy of minimalist/barefoot shoes. Reddit has an entire sub dedicated to the topic that may help shed some light. I too was told to use superfeet insoles and have completely given those up.

I will say you would benefit from the wider toe box still even using the insole, as most shoes are too crowded but most who wear these types of shoes would say to strengthen your arch and try to avoid insoles where possible.

I was charged $16 shipping for two pairs. Not sure why but didn't have the $5 shipping option. Anyone else experience that?

I was charged for Flat Rate (FedEx Smart Post), which was $4.99 for the item and $2.99 for each additional item.
