Xero's return/exchange policy isn't as great as they claim. Returning them will cost you $10 and you don't get your original shipping refunded. You don't really "exchange", either: you have to place a new order and after that, they'll give you a prepaid label for returning the first pair and will refund the first purchase + shipping. What if you can't (or don't want to) place another order because they're out of stock? Too bad, send 'em back for a refund less $15.

Any brands or specific stores (REI?) in the Midwest that might have a variety of options?

REI has Xero and some select Vivobarefoot options (I believe Bedrock too if you want hiking sandals) Given the return policy, they're a good first trial option since you can put some miles on them and still make a return.
Vivobarefoot direct also has a 100 day return policy including return shipping. That's a good options too.
Amazon Whitins and LRuns are a good cheap entry as well, won't last as long but at $40 or less great way to see if you like the style.
PS go slow if you switch over, don't hurt yourself.

Would the barefoot design go well with orange superfeet? I have plantar fasciitis and the doc has recommended Orange Superfeet. Thanks.
Not a doc so don't want to give medical advice but using insoles would go against the philosophy of minimalist/barefoot shoes. Reddit has an entire sub dedicated to the topic that may help shed some light. I too was told to use superfeet insoles and have completely given those up.
I will say you would benefit from the wider toe box still even using the insole, as most shoes are too crowded but most who wear these types of shoes would say to strengthen your arch and try to avoid insoles where possible.
