This is a good price for a "meh" but fully serviceable bike - not mountain bike. Surely capable to ride around in city trails, commute etc while focusing at the lowest possible price, just don't try to follow your seasoned MTB friends on single track with this...think of it as "gravel" bike at best.

This is also not a $400 MSRP bike by any stretch of imagination, this is a $120-150 bike, or at least it was pre-pandemic.

Good value for riding around the neighborhood or gifting to a wife or a kid that won't try crazy shit on it.
I've seen this bike. There's a few of them in the endcap bike display. It seemed an odd looking bike at first, that's why I stopped and looked at it. Then I started comparing it with the 26" Schwinn next to it and figured out this 27.5" bike is a 26" bike with a extended seat. Looks kind of dorky IMO, like a low rider bike with long seat pipe.. You might want to look at it first before purchase. The $90-something Roadmaster looked better to me. Just my 2 cents.

First bike ever?

I would go with the Axum. If you get into riding off road it does have room to grow and it's layout is more like a modern mountain bike. Things like disc brakes are nice if you will ride in wet or muddy places.

However, if your real intent is mostly on road then this bike is better since it's more like a hybrid bike. Think of it like buying an SUV. If most of the time you will drive on dry, clear roads and occasionally on a semi-snowy road you are likely better off with a car based crossover. But if you are going to venture into muddy fields then something with better off road abilities at the expense of on road makes sense (4Runner, Jeep Wrangler).

If you get the Axum deal for 228 it's a steal, it's a real mountain bike with modern frame design and has front and rear disc brakes with the front being 180 mm and 1x drive train with 29x2.6 tires and 30 mm wheels which is unheard of even for entry level big brand mountain bikes. Can be fully upgraded but even stock it's enough for moderate mountain biking trails.

The Axum would be worth the extra $$ for disc brakes and gearing setup and you could upgrade seat and pedals for more riding comfort.
Thanks and reps to you all for sharing your thoughts. Yes, I got it and this will be my first bike buying with my own money! Big Grin

I am not sure if I really will do any trails or not thought. I dont even have a bike carrier to take this to trails. Also since I am in the northeast, so not a great place to bike.

This thing looks like a death trap. It would probably be better to just walk than buy this.

How easy is this bike to assemble if we get this shipped? Just curious
It's fairly easy. The hardest part for me was adjusting the brakes as I'd never done it before and seemed a bit finicky (though this would likely apply to any bicycle).

Here's a video that looks like it's the same model (this also looks familiar from when I did it): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7oABg9lyOBo

Good trails exist all over the country. They do vary in character but even "flat states" can have some great trails. Of course if you live in the heart of NYC that would be harder. Check out this site for trail suggestions

Picked one up, will be a nice addition to my current vintage road bike and beater bike. At first I bought the $84 ST50 model, but canceled the order, after seeing that it had single-wall rims, and for just a few dollars more, the XL version of the ST100 had double-wall rims for higher durability, plus the upsized 27.5" wheels, as opposed to 26". Hoping this will be a decent exercise bike, that handles occasional road gravel or sticks better than my old Schwinns.

I mean, you your little rascal wants to go dirt jumping or trail riding, you should know better not to leave them with this bike. But the vast (vast) majority of kids on bikes, riding around neighborhoods or going to school etc, will find this 2 wheeler more than sufficient.

I'm very confused about the bike sizes. Typically don't they just have different tire sizes? Like you go up from a 20 inch to a 24 inch to a 26 inch bike? I don't recall seeing them listed in small medium and large. And it doesn't show the tire size is being different for each size
20" and 24" are for older children.

26", 27.5" and 29" are tire diameter for adult mountain bikes.
They are not sizes for bikes themselves. Bike sizes are either S,M, L or by the length of the seat tube, e.g. 16", 18", etc.

You can be 5' and still ride a 29" bike in size S and you can be 6' and ride a 26" bike in size L.

Road bikes come in tire size 700C (similar to older 27" tire). They are very narrow tires (to ride only on paved roads) compared to MTB tires.

This is a pretty good deal I'd say. I don't think it was ever worth the MSRP, but it's certainly a fine bike for $100.

I bought this a few months ago for $198. I don't know much about bikes but it seems nicer than my wife's $100 Walmart Roadmaster bike, so for $98 I'd say it's totally worth it if you need a basic bike. I do not plan on using this for actual mountain biking, just riding around town, parks and some dirt/gravel trails with my family.

I tried chatting with Walmart customer service about getting a price adjustment since it's still within the return period. After a lot of back and forth (first offered me a $5 promo code, then offered to help me with a return/rebuy) they finally offered me a $50 refund (best they could do apparently). It's not the full difference but it was worth it for a little bit of my time and not having to return/rebuy.
Is the large a good size or do they run small?

Damn, I wish my Cannondale was modern enough to ride modern trails. Oh well, I guess I have to stick with the old fashion trails.

Go try to race an experienced rider on a stock Axum, guaranteed it'll outperform your Cannondale stock for stock even with its crappy fork

Honestly it's *mostly* about inseam. There's way more to it, and you can spend hours with all the opinions about what's best, but the guidelines will be correct for *most* people. The only way to know for sure is to get on one and ride it, adjust it, ride it, then adjust it again. But, for a 98 dollar bike, it'll probably be just fine. If you find it's too big/small and/or you want a bike to do more than ride on the concrete path at your local park, it's then probably time to visit a bike shop and have someone take their time to get it right.

Thanks. Looking for simple one for now to do casual riding. If I get more serious then I will get a better one.
