This is not a bad price but if you are deal hunting I would wait. It has been $290 before and I expect it to at least match that going into Black Friday and NAND price crash that will line up this year. I dream of $250.

This is PCIe Gen 3, got a 2tb PCIe Gen 4 for only $180 with double the speed, so I am thinking they should be getting cheaper soon.

QLC. It's not particularly cheap storage at $78.50/TB. 2TB TLC drives have been going for $120.

4TB Team Group MP34 can be had for $350.

Price will drop massively since YMTC is ramping up production from 0% to 25%+ world market share.

Might PCIe 5.0 help drop the prices of the "older" tech drives?
Also, wouldn't speed be dependent on the OS first and foremost? I didn't think apps even had to be tweaked to utilize the speeds.

It's really a question of speed vs quickness. Maximum speed is only marginal benefit, but fast random reads and writes really help on day-to-day usage. It turns out that the controller to make a fast drive also generally leads to a quick drive. So the same PCIe 5.0 drive run at even PCIe 2.0 speeds won't have much practical difference. Not many things take up gigabytes of memory.

I guess OS has something to do with it, but the general processing power of the machine and efficiency of the code certainly. I'm sure a lot of code is still optimized for use with quirks of clackers. DirectStorage makes better use of SSDs, but it doesn't change the relative advantage of a quick drive.

But to answer your question, yeah, newer tech, even if marginally beneficial, tends to push down the prices of older stuff. But, there's a general economic slowing happening as well.

Apple will only sell YMTC products in China and that's a huge use. So it's a bit of a moot point if it is consumed domestically and not dumped on the international market.
Their Flash is fine by the way if that's the concern.

A lot of those sales are forced (domestic market protection), but I'm much more comfortable with products from Korea and or the US. It's kind of pathetic that we invented this stuff, but haven't been making it.

Same goes for almost all high tech, solar panels, yada, yada. Hoping it will change in the next 5 years.
