Anything that is recycled is taken to the back room/stock area and put into a large box that is on a shipping pallet. Every so often once the box is full, that box is shrink wrapped and picked up by the "returns truck" and it all goes to an e-waste recycler.

Knowledge about this is from me working for Staples for 8 years. I was Electronics supervisor for 6 of those 8 years with keys to the store, and I was their "Inventory Associate" for a year.

I took in a corded mouse and a couple of useless car chargers and the manager said "You are our first tech recycler!" She seemed happy about it and printed out a receipt. I go by this store several times a month so once a month I will drop off a couple things. Like all of you, I have numerous RS-232 cables, serial port connectors, a couple dozen RCA cables and other useless junk. If they can recycle it and I get 5.00 for a 5 minute stop, it's all good.

I went to Staples one time for shredding. They had a Iron Mountain locked bin. They weighed it and it was 1 per pound and you put the items in the shred bin yourself

What is the best use of the reward? Guessing they cannot be used on gift cards and isn't everything else dated and overpriced technology/office supplies? I haven't been to Staples in years, but I have tons of items I could recycle with this deal in the upcoming months.

I used to do their ink rewards back in the day, then they changed the rules and you had to spend $XX on ink-toner to get the recycle rewards so that killed it. I can see this eventually going that way, or they change to $5 off $XX coupons after a year or so, especially if the SD effect is about to flood them with eWaste.

As for what to spend it on, I used to use the rewards for ream of paper, pens, USB drives, SD cards, or just grab snacks or sodas at the checkout line. Eventually I ended up mostly spending it on school supplies to donate to my kids teachers.

I took an ewaste item in on 14th of September to try to use this promotion, and the Staples clerk knew nothing about this program. I recommend having a staples link on your phone to educate staples staff

Combining ink rewards with price matching Amazon I've kept finding reasons to shop there. Bought an expensive printer as well as a document scanner recently, matched Amazon on them and was happy with the net prices after Rewards. They also sell a small subset of Apple branded stuff, which is often harder to get discounts on and Rewards bring down the price. Rewards also drop the price BEFORE tax, so you save the tax percentage too if applicable. They used to have generous coupons and rebates but those have been few and far between lately.

I recycle ink each month anyway, so another $5 discount for hauling over other tech trash is fine with me.
