This is a lightning deal that's about to end. I came across it on my daily search for a decent budget beginner router. I'm tempted by it but haven't decided. The price is lower than the last SD in April ($70.99).
It's not a Bosch, Makita, or a Dewalt, but it has good reviews, some nice add-ons, and seems workable for DIYers. I also saw it included in some lists of best budget routers during a google hunt.
Deal ends in like an hour, sadly. So sorry for the short notice! Posting just in case anyone finds it helpful and happens to see it in time, haha

This router is horrible.
First off, for any, and all item "Best ____" posts out there online, if they have an Amazon link, then they're posting it as a price point, rather than actual quality. This is because they make a % if you click the link and buy it. Any time I see an "Affiliate" link, I automatically toss out every part of that review/opinion/list because it's there for someone to profit from.
As far as Avid tools, they are no good, since you can get identical versions (in a different color lol) for less money.... for instance Amazon has this one, another Makita clone, for $60.

They are all made the same way, possibly at the same place. There are a ridiculous number of Makita clones out there Lol. And all simply aren't very good.
The Makita is good... especially if you get the plunge base... the plunge base in itself is what makes me consider the makita to be the best palm router under $300. Better than the Bosch, better than the Dewalt, and way better than the Milwaukee.
So just my opinion, and if you click my affiliate link... lmao jk š š¤£ š š.
So, hold off till October/November and you'll more than likely be able to get the actual Makita for the same price as this Avid. š

Also, it would be ideal to just get a kit that comes with a plunge base to begin with. I am in the weeds of Bosch vs Makita, corded vs cordless, palm vs bigger...but that's fun and and, who knows, I may need till October/November to decide. (Input, though - always welcome).
Appreciate you - except for the fact now I have The More You Know's jingle stuck in my head. (I forgive you, though

Lmao... I get that alot!!! Lol.
Well, if you're just starting out with routers, it's a tough call in where to invest.
For the best overall corded router value, keep an eye out ,(and set a SlickDeal Search Alert) for the Bosch 1617EVSPK. It's a corded mud sized router that can do just about anything. And that setup gets you the plunge, and standard bases. It can go for $150, but it'll do a whole lot more than any palm router, should you ever decide to build a router table (definitely build, and not buy... Unless it's a realllly good, like $350+ for like 75% off. Lol).
But, a palm router is great... corded are more than good, but cordless just really hits the spot with a plunge base. I prefer corded if 8ts just a standard base, because they're not as top heavy as a cordless one that has batteries on top. But if you do go cordless, 8ve gotten the Makita 18v in the past, for around $80 as a bare tool... but just know, just the plunge base, without router, usually costs around $80 by itself. (Oof!!) And it hurts me every single time I buy one because they never seem to go on sale... ever.
Plus, if not on a battery platform, Makita is a great brand overall to use. If I was just starting out, I'd go Makita for sure.
But if you don't want to go Full Makita, then there's knock off batteries and chargers for a pretty decent price out there.
If already on a battery platform (Bosch, Dewalt, Milwaukee, etc) then there's batteries adapters. But, they will make the cordless router be even more tippy as it puts the battery even higher from the base.
So... there's a few hundred more things to consider for ya. Glad you didn't get the Avid... that would've been a horrible first router. You'd have been better off with a Refurbished version of a good router.

CPO outlets has a refurbished version of the Bosch 1617EVSPK at $159 that I loaded into my shopping cart yesterday. I know better deals are coming, but ugh, it's so hard not to just buy it. (You've been so generous already and totally don't have to answer this, but if you happen to have bandwidth, I'd love to know what you think of buying refurb from CPO).
And Makita 18V is my goals platform, so I've been eyeing their cordless router on various sites for the past couple months. The only cordless power tools I own at this point are the cheapest of the Ryobi - brushed, no less. They're fine, nothing wrong with them, etc., but I don't enjoy using them at all. My mom's boyfriend has Makita - including the 18V track saw, which needs to come home with me - and now that I've experienced tools that actually consider ergonomics, I don't think I can go back. (Milwaukee and Dewalt friends, I support you and think your stuff's great. I'm just a sucker for machines that work and also feel good in your hands). It's great to hear that you'd recommend the 18V router. I have a Home Depot gift card to use up and based on your take - as well as the comment from @nickraper - sounds like using that to offset the expense of moving into the Makita platform would make sense.
So THANK you...again! With any luck, I'll be able to find and post a deal that's useful to *you* soon
Regarding the bosch router 1617EVSPK. I have that exact model mounted in their router table and it works well. https://www.boschtools.
Also I will echo what IncompletePerfect said. If I see a "best of" or "top 10 list" I just skip it since its just there to have you click the affiliate link. Its hard to find sites that do actual reviews instead of regurgitate the bullet points on the amazon listing.
