Back about six years ago toolboss44 on YouTube coined the term; there was no name for the act and it also worked to keep the act secret as a code word- since forums were monitored by HD, which at the time did not tolerate the buying and returning, and employed different methods of discouragement. It was not at all as easy as it is now. I would argue it took some social engineering at the time, so maybe hack is the right term.

They weren't always split up, HD for a time combined or didn't allow partial refunds. Sometimes a manager was needed

Deal seems okay. The tool only version (no bag, no battery) goes for $149 regularly. If you get the promo with the two 6ah batteries now, you're paying $149 for the tool that way.

You guys are killing me with this stupid definition of hacking. You're just returning an item to a store, for a clearly detailed value on the receipt.
Here's the etymology of "hack"

"Old English haccian 'cut in pieces', of West Germanic origin; related to Dutch hakken and German hacken"

Are you arguing that people aren't cutting the deal into pieces when they keep one half and return the other half?

This is what the community has come to call this practice. It's not like I pulled the terminology out of thin air.

A more appropriate word would be, fraud.
Not really fraud when the manufacturer and distribution partner clearly condone it... It's not like they are not aware of it... And since when was returning an item in new condition and otherwise adhering to the return policy considered fraud? Don't be such a tight ass they will end this practice when they deem fit, they clearly need to move inventory without lowering advertised prices which they are doing by allowing this practice which they know only a small portion of consumers will be taking part in. As others have said the term for this in thie community is hack. Hack has a lot of meanings... You might be a hack if you are calling this legal return practice fraud... You clearly can't hack writing a helpful or accurate post on the internet. If you have a college degree you may as well hack it up at this point.
