Terrible comment. Both have their place, but alkalines rule for many applications still.

I think it depends on the application. Things you use daily should use rechargeable, but things like smoke detectors, remotes, or other things that will go years without a change I like to use alkaline.

The 48 pack here is 0.27 cents per batt. I have used them for over a year now, and I would say they are on par with energizer, an maybe not quite as good as Duracell power wise. But I have had a couple Duracell's leak and get that nasty green stuff on them when they sit for a while, I have never had one of these do that.

That is an issue of the rechargeables you're using. Make sure you get high voltage rechargeables (1.5-1.7V), not low voltage rechargeables (1.1-1.3V) and your alarms will not draw as much amperage, lasting far longer. We use NiMH rechargeables for most devices due to being environmentally friendly. We use Lithium rechargeables for our wireless smoke alarms in all of our houses, and they last LONGER than what we used to use - Duracell Alkaline. They are, obviously, much cheaper as well.

Do you have a particular brand / model you like for those? I've looked in the past but reviews are all over the board...

The evidence is circumstantial indeed; however in my experience rechargeable batteries don't work well with old retro game handhelds. I learned in this thread it's most likely because most standard rechargeable AAs are 1.2 and not 1.5 volts that vintage handhelds require ergo having a few genuine alkaline AAs on hand is very useful IMO.


For example, Tiger Electronics handhelds will not display all the LCD characters correctly if rechargeable AAs are used. In my personal testing, only Alkaline AAs will give consistent test results and confirm that the handheld is truly working correctly. Confirming functionality is important especially if you are refurbishing and selling Tiger Electronics handhelds like I do.

You can use other rechargeables such as Nickle Cadmium or Lithium Ion. They will provide the full voltage those electronics require.

For full power and high capacity we use EBL (cheap random fleabay) lithium ion batteries. They last for a long time and provide a full 1.5V (tested with multimeter). The only issue we've found with this brand is that they are a TINY bit larger than a typical AA so they fit tightly.
