Most reviewers (I think America's Test Kitchen did a good video on this) say D5 is overkill and actually has undesirable heating characteristics (takes longer to heat up with no benefit and costs much more) compared to D3.

Most reviewers (I think America's Test Kitchen did a good video on this) say D5 is overkill and actually has undesirable heating characteristics (takes longer to heat up with no benefit and costs much more) compared to D3.

We've got wedding coming up, so I'm trying to figure out what are actually lifetime items for the house, so folks that want to gift - gift things we use for life and can think of our friends every time we use them!

I'd rather piece it together with the factory 2nds sales . If it had a 12 inch frying pan then maybe but 8 inch and 10 inch pans are almost useless to me. And also I'd get the D3 based on research

Were they just boiling water and calling it cooking? I have D7 and they don't heat up slow enough but they each weigh like 5-8lbs.

They're slightly more responsive to heat changes and heat slightly more evenly compared to the standard D3 and D5 ones. To be honest, it's nice to have though the standard clad ones with aluminum sandwiched between steel layers are a better value.

I actually don't think most people would recognize the difference between the steel/copper ones and the steel/aluminum clad ones unless they were observing them closely while cooking.

All Clad certainly is pretty, and this is approaching a great deal. That said, I've done everything from slinging soup and toasted sandwiches to sliding delicately plated $150+ dishes into the pass and I've never used anything beyond relatively cheap aluminum or carbon steel pans in those restaurants. I've got some AllClad at home that I got as a wedding present 15 years ago, but most of the time you'll find cheap Volrath, ancient cast, or carbon steel on top of my stove. I don't feel that the high end pans make better food. Same thing with expensive knives.

Congrats on the wedding! Other possibilities to consider besides stuff— contribution to kid's college fund, honeymoon fund, down payment fund, or your preferred causes. I personally preferred gifting to those options.

But if you need cookware, D3 is solid and lifetime, probably lodge cast iron and Le Crueset enameled Dutch ovens would fit in that category as well.

I'm confused here. Yes, D5 normally cost much more than D3. It is better made and 5-ply construction. In this case the D5 set is over a couple hundred dollars cheaper than D3. It's unheard of to find the premium D5 at this price. normally this is the cost of a few pans from the D5 line.

Every store other than Nordstrom's has this set for $900 right now.

Macy's routinely has a D3 set with decently useful pieces (for smaller kitchen) for <$300. (As low as $220-240 if you time it right and stack with other portals/deals/coupons).

The main differences in pieces are a larger 8qt vs 6qt stock pot, two sauce pans (1.5 & 3qt) vs one (2qt), and an extra smaller 8" fry pan. So I guess it comes down to the extra pieces and whether they are useful and whether it's better to spend more for "better" in specs but not in everyday use.

This is gonna sound nuts, I'd still rather pay more to buy individual D3 cookware than a D5 set. I have a 8&10 in d3 pan, d3 stock pot, along with a d5 12 in pan and d5 4qt pot all picked up as factory seconds. I'm a fairly large guy and the d5 pan/pot are extremely heavy to me when food is added. Everything becomes a 2 hand operation.

The d3 pans feel much more manageable and I honestly can't say I've noticed the d5 difference when cooking. The d5 do feel indestructible though, definitely feels like your getting a lifetime product. All that being said this is definitely a good price if the set fits your needs AND you're okay with heavy pans.
