I just built several of these with the 20" Red Lasko (Sam's or Costco, can't remember). And on mine, I was advised here (iirc) to do a Corsi-Rosenthal box with it... and it's amazing... but extremely overkill. I realized a smaller, more effective way using 2 of the M13- 20x20x1 filters and fashioned them into a V-shape, giving the fan a triangular appearance. It will work at least 2x better than this particular QVC version.

However, if you have a 3d printer, I've seen cads on a mounting bracket that makes this same version of QVC's fan.

Basically, by a 20in fan, for $20, and do it yourself. But if doing a single filter, don't go beyond Merv-8 (unless you are, at least, doing the triangle design)... or you'll be replacing the fan faster than the filter. lol. also, with a fully exposed front grate on fan, it will actually pull in air through the front of the fan, and render filtering useless with it.

I now have 3 in house, and 2 bigger versions in the woodshop... and I'll never buy a fancy $300 airfilter ever again.

Well, the point of this widely available at multiple retailers (Home Depot, Menards, Amazon, etc.) box fan is that you don't have to own a 3D printer and waste hours McGuyvering something up just to have it die a few months later because the underpowered motor burned out. With this one, sure, go ahead, you can officially stick a MERV13 in it.

Now if yours looks decent and you enjoyed spending the time on it, great. Personally that sounds like work to me, mine would end up looking like a drunk man with a blow torch was assembling it blindfolded, and I earn enough that I come out ahead working a few hours extra that week and buying the premade ones.

That's the thing about DYI, it's great if your results are premium quality, you enjoy doing it, and your time is worth less than whatever you're putting together.

And when any of those aren't true, it's not.

You don't need "hours" - took five minutes. I have yet to have one die out. Knowing Lasko fans, I suspect it's the exact same motor.

If you care about appearance, you're already getting a regular HEPA purifier. This is only useful when there's a wildfire for product diversity, since everything sells out.

Don't give up your day job to become a detective.

It's essentially an upgraded "WeatherShield" window motor model with a filter attachment.

Cheapo Lasko Big Lots fans you're talking about ain't rain-resistant.

OP is a very good price on this unit, which hovers around $68 normally: https://www.lasko.com/products/ai...fan-ff305/

5 minutes?

LoL, no.

If your going to argue about the time requirement, at least be honest about the time required.

An hour or two would be realistic for most people.

And of course with your method, you're repeating that every filter change. Only get's done once with the Lasko.

And as you yourself said, you're using lower MERV filters, not the MERV13's Lasko states this one can take. You even warned against using them.

And, sorry again, but "normal box fan" and "taped together filter / fan / triangle / cube thingy" are not equally ugly. People that care about appearance might not care enough about it to spend $300 to look fancy, but $30 extra for not triggering company to face palm, sure.

Oh, and no wildfires here. Hot, rainy, and humid year round. Plenty of pollen and spores and dander though. Meow. There's a whole country east of California. Something like 80% of the population lives in it.

Arizona, Oregon, Washington, Nevada, Utah and Colorado don't exist inside California, FYI. All regularly have wildfires and/or smoke. About the same caliber as your other responses.

Not to mention neighboring states that get the smoke too.

To others: If you aren't getting wildfire ready, and just want cleaner air at home... again, either save your money and use some simple tape-work... or spend a little more and get a refurb HEPA air purifier.

Added together they're around 20% of the population.

The fancy air purifiers themselves aren't the big cost. A refurb isn't going to make much difference long term. It's the proprietary filters - https://slickdeals.net/f/16030981-coway-airmega-max-2-air-purifier-replacement-filter-set-for-400-400s-73-70-free-shipping?src=SiteSearch

The whole point of the DYI approach was to use cheap AC filters. Lasko just made it look nicer, made it more reliable, and made it a good bit more convenient. For $30 extra.

Don't you have a better use for your time than remaking the same contraption over again ever few months?

Dude. You are going to have to work a lot of extra hours this week, just to make up the time wasted arguing about a damn fan. 😆

There is some reverse flow in the corners but not enough to affect the filtration much. There could be some dust pulled in that way but it would just be blown back out immediately and eventually be pulled into the filter the correct way. Making a shroud does only take a few minutes though.

A true slickdeal-er would just duct tape the filter to a $13 box fan and call it done. You could even use a thicker filter if you wanted to. LOL at UV color protection paint and weather shield motor. I've left cheap box fans exposed to rain and sunlight in the back yard for years and they still work just fine. We unplug when not in use or when it rains of course.

I have a Lasko and Holmes box fan with a filter on each secured with bungee cord that I got from HD a few BF's ago. Was wondering if/when I would be using them when I bought the bungee container for $5 (or something like that). Works well enough.

Any filter deals out there?
