That might be because this also uses the M1…

When did you have the M1 Air?

The reason I ask is late last year Resolve was updated to run natively on the M1, so if your bad experience was prior to the update, it's possible things have changed.

A couple years ago, Apple moved away from Intel CPUs (i3, i5, i7) and started making their own (M1, now M2). I'm oversimplifying things, but when software runs natively, these systems perform amazingly well, even with 8GB of RAM.

Prior to the shift, and with Windows, it's like we've gotten used to driving around in a truck with the bed full of concrete, towing an RV. We all know that 8 gallons of gas isn't enough to drive 20 miles to the beach and back. But if you take that concrete out of the back and unhook the RV, suddenly 8 gallons of gas is more than enough.

For what's it worth, the only time I ever ran into my memory limit was opening multiple DAW projects with 10+ VST's running at a time. Otherwise running one project was smooth, and video editing in Resolve was fine where it only got a bit slow when adding certain effects.

Read or watch some of the reviews. Unless youre doing 4k editing on a regular basis, if you are in the >95% normal use cases, 8gb vs 16gb makes no difference. The guy below got his feelings hurt because he actually is in that slim % of people who prob would get significant benefit.

I would say not to approach the ram choice as if it was any non M1/M2 cpu computer. I would never buy a laptop with less than 16 or make a desktop with less than 32gb if it was intel/amd cpu.
Agreed with all this, though I still worry about future proofing given the lifetimes people tend to keep apple laptops. Wouldn't do less than 16 for future proofing reasons but I also don't do less than than 32 on non swappable Windows either. So agreed with what you are saying.

Think about this for a second. You are getting the MBP M1 with 512GB SSD for the MSRP of the entry Air model with only 256GB SSD.

The 2017 MBP's were hot garbage. If yours is going strong, you got one of the few good ones. Nearly everyone at our company who got in on the mac program in 2017/2018 got the 2017 models and most, if not all, were force replaced this time last year when the 14/16" models were introduced due to constant issues.

If you get a new MBP, get a 14/16" M1 Pro at minimum. The 13" air/pro are decent bang for the buck (get the air instead) but the screens and ports alone on the 14/16" models are well worth the upgrade.
that is the plan 14/16" pro , no rush will hopefully find a decent open box deal from BB or microcenter.

Debating between this and an open box MacBook Air M2 for $1043. Anyone able to weigh in? I don't need the extra 512gb storage but I heard the 256gb of storage is slow.

Can you upgrade the ram on these? And is bootcamp for running Windows still a thing?
You can't upgrade the ram and apple silicone machines can't run boot camp. You would need to *run windows through a VM.

Moron. With 8gb the laptop will memory cap and close programs just OPENING a single 10min project in Resolve. This is trash for any real work without 16gb
Good thing I don't do any real work

I purchased the Costco 256GB model for a high school student. It should be enough for internet, watching videos, listen to music, homework, multi day lasting battery. Same quality Windows machine would cost me $1500+, for example Dell XPS 16GB ram, HP Spectre etc.
No one should buy these 8GB RAM models for work. Most professional applications are either not compatible, even in VM things don't work well, and 16GB is bare minimum. However, professional workstations are usually $2500-3000 and up, so even latest 16GB MBPro 14/16 Apple actually is a good cheap alternative.

I was looking for a 16GB config with M1 or the M2. Honest opinion, 8GB sufficient enough? Or should I wait for an M2 deal with 16GB? This is super tempting at this price point. I already have a MacBook 16 Pro with 16GB but wanted one for portability

I have to post this every time people come up with but M1 uses RAM differently.

M1 uses RAM more efficiently has to be one of the most widespread BS ever.

It is a fast CPU and the memory is on the same chip reducing latency significantly for access.

But there is NOTHING that makes it use LESS memory for the same applications on an Intel machine. In fact, the available memory is less since the same memory is shared between video, neural engine, etc. All that makes for a very powerful processing power but if an application uses a lot of memory or you multi-task between apps, it will suffer the same swap delays that comes from less memory.

The reason this BS exists other than Apple shills is that the newer Macs have a much faster SSD than previous Intel models so the swapping in and out is much faster.

The 8GB is the minimum that Apple could get away with.

I had posted a head to head comparison between an M1 and an Intel i5 equivalent in SSD speed using exact same OS snapshot and applications. M1 does very well in benchmarks and does slightly faster Xcode compilations. But video processing using Handbrake was actually a bit slower on the M1. The M1 is actually much more powerful than what is required for use on these Macs and so the far superior processing brings very little benefit.

Applications are becoming much more memory hogs than before, so do yourself a favor and skip the 8GB version unless you use it for about the same level of use as an iPad. You will find future OS upgrades and apps suffering from swapping delays very soon requiring an upgrade as Apple intends.
MacOS, all the way back to the early OSX days, has always done a better job with memory management vs. windows. M1 does it better only because of lower latency and SoC, not that it is technically "faster" just has less roadblocks.

Yes, I agree that 8gb is low, especially since most browsers with multiple tabs can peg memory usage but again for the people using this 8gb of ram is plenty. My wife wouldn't get much more about of a 16gb upgrade on her Air she got last year. However, I would which is why I went with the 14" 10/16core machine with 16gb ram.

What people need to say is "if you have a need, get the machine with more ram. however, if you don't, then 8gb will get you by just fine".

Can you expand on that? I've never bought a Mac book and was ready to dismiss this over the ram.
Mac user my whole life, I bought an M1 MacBook Air about a year ago. I was also fairly certain that I needed more than 16 gb of RAM, but a former student who was working as an Apple engineer at the time assured me that due to the way the M1 chips worked, 8 gb would be plenty. I used my computer both for work and personal stuff for 8 months or so, using Citrix Remote Desktop at the same time as running code in RStudio and having Chrome open with ten million tabs. I can count on one hand the number of times I've had the computer give me the spinning Beach ball of death. It works great. Very happy with my purchase. I opted for the Air because the specs were virtually identical to the Pro, but the Air was about $150 cheaper. If I was in the market for a new laptop I'd jump on this deal.

STRONG agree. My 2017 MBP had the display replaced twice and the logic board replaced twice, all covered by Apple except one logic board replacement covered by credit card extended warranty. When I finally gave up on it last year I swore it needed an exorcism.
