Yes. Even if the Walmart bike were to have the same components and similar quality frame, the REI bike will be properly fit to you, is professionally assembled/adjusted, and comes with free service for a year.

And, it'll retain resale value for when you decide that you really like riding and want to upgrade.
Definitely better than a Wallmart bike and you get free adjustments for a year and one tune-up.

I've found the quality of the initial adjustments depends on the store and person you get, so you may have to make a few trips if you are unlucky. While it's definitely better service than any big box store, it's not always as good a dedicated bike shop in my experience. My wife and I both have CTY 1.1 bikes and hers was adjusted perfectly while mine had some noticeable issues. My first visit back they told me these were normal for this level of components despite my wife's bike being able to be adjusted properly. A second visit addressed it.
I read that Axum thread. Seems like there were lots of problems with fit/stand over height, much talk about needing upgrades, and tons of problems with assembly.

Additionally, this REI bikes is designed for a different type of riding. Which brings up something else that the REI staff will do for you: fit you to the right type of bike for what you intend to do with it.

Just be sure to check the frame size for your body height and select accordingly. Disc Brakes are SOOO nice, I couldn't believe the difference when I switched.

Not technically true. I just grabbed the Schwinn Axum for $228 from the deal recently posted. Bought shimano mt200 hydraulic brakes for $50 and then new pedals for $20. Once I get a nice used set of air forks for around 150-200 it'll be leagues above this REI bike. Not to mention the Axum has modern geometry and a 1x8 drivetrain.

Granted, this requires customizing the bike and not a lot of people have the desire to do that. Also, it only comes in a large size frame.
The Axum is crap for commuting. Do NOT buy this for commuting. As a entry level mountain bike yes, but it will make your commute times 50% longer.

Hydraulics are not really needed for a commuter. For trail descents, YES. For a drop bar bike so you can stop from the tops of the hoods or a 40+ MPH decent, YES YES

Support, and this is a BIG one

The REI is a hybrid and a much better on pavement bike, the Axum is a Hard Tail STARTER mountain bike.

And the REI is just a nicer bike. I have test rode them. I own an Axum as a beater.

Great option for a daily commuter/fitness/bike path bike. At this price point, it is hard to be component quality and nationwide support from REI, and getting the fit right at the store. Unneeded things like a shock or fatter tires only add weight and shift cost and from the things you need (lighter frame, quality components)

Great deal. I paid $550 (with 10% REI credit at year end) for this bike in late 2020 during the great bike shortage. I love the comfort of this bike. Only complaint are the squeaky brakes (common issue mentioned in the reviews) where I used my "free tuneup within 12 months" to try to fix it but the squeaking returned after 2 rides lol
