Transfer to Etihad, they can book AA flights.
Also ANA, but their fuel surcharges are through the roof $400+ one way.
Delta obviously on it's own metal.
Virgin Atlantic can also book DL and ANA. But they also pass on the fuel surcharge.
Singapore and Air Canada can be transferred too but they cost more points for flights than Etihad.

I did on 2019 for 19 days. Japan is the safest to travel to from what I know. It's the people being just overly courteous. If you get anything stolen, it would probably be from another foreigner. The only thing I didn't like was there were no street signs to tell you what street is what. I relied on my cellphone for directions and getting anywhere. I had google Fi so I didn't need to get an international plan. You can get a mobile hotspot data module to rent for weeks or months. two of the things to prepare for ahead of time is getting a Shinkansen (bullet train) pass from here in USA to redeem the voucher in Japan and the Studio Ghibli Museum. I got one to last a week and used it a 4 days after arriving in Tokyo and went to Kyoto. Stayed there 6 days and left on the 7th day early morning to head to Himeji Castle, then head back to Tokyo the afternoon on the last day of the bullet train pass. Did shopping in Akihabara and Odaiba on the last 5 days of the trip. I might end up doing the same routine again but going to Asakusa and spending an extra day in Shinjuku
We flew Scoot which is the LCC of Singapore airlines a few years ago. They flew 787 dreamliners as well. Staff was very nice but you paid for EVERYTHING. No drinks or food or entertainment. All luggage was to be paid in advanced or you pay like double day of. Even the power outlets at the seats had to be paid for. Also, no outside food and drinks (although attendants didn't seem to mind).
We also feel JAL first time to Japan and it was an amazing experience.

Booked my tickets this morning through Zipair. So Zipair still has the discount on.
Tokyo and Osaka have many places to visit and tons of fun activities to do! I kind of just winged most of the time but always found something new and exciting to do and plenty of amazing foods to try.
Stuff I recommend getting besides the basics are a nice high-capacity power bank or 2 and renting a wifi hotspot device( I got them as cheap as 90$ for the whole 3 months I was there with a 100GB a month limit) delivered to my home in the US for use in Japan.

No food service, no wake ups, nada if you don't do anything. You can buy food, or bring your own, or eat before.
787 configured like the ANA parent 787s, so seatguru saying there's legroom for tall, fast, or both apply. (But it's still economy not flat business class.)
...
T-Mobile USA roams free abroad, so unless you need gobs of data wifi can't give you conveniently, the usual Narita travel sim + train package works....
IF YOU BRING A FULLY UNLOCKED PHONE (NO SIM OR CARRIER OR REGION LOCKS).
If you bring a sim unlocked, but region locked phone, it won't work.
You'll want at minimum a phone that supports 3g bend 1, if not 4g band 1 for the widest coverage.
You can look up the 3g/4g band charts for the other bands.
...
Normally, when there's tourists before covid:
Narita Express into Tokyo Station is recommended. Quick, fast, nice view, and drops you into the biggest station on the east side - the calmer, non-touristy business side.
(Honestly, arriving in Shibuya/Shinjuku after a long flight is a PITA because it's so crowded and such.)
Freaking huge underground mall = haircut to food to shopping gifts etc without needing to exit the station.
Nowadays with nobody traveling, relative ghost towns - Tokyo Station, shibuya, etc.
Those wanting bars, dancing, young clothes, indie movies, big city experience, etc - west side, shibuya/shinjuku.
Those bookish/geeks, relaxed strolls, museums, upscale, smaller city experience - east side from rich Ginza shopping, relaxed hibiya to imperial palace strolls, bookstores up to kanda, geeks in akiba.
....
You WILL want a map, digital or printed, of the Tokyo metro system. Figure it out, get a Suica card, load it up, and away you go. It is the easiest way to get around Tokyo rain or shine.
(Narita airport, Tokyo Station. You can get sim card, suica card, etc.)
Then another map for Tokyo Station + the underground mall. They're HUGE because it's linked to just about everything else (ie. You can Shinkansen train from Tokyo to the rest of Japan, Disney, etc.).
...
Covid infection and death rates about 2x that of America right now.
Meaning in there's a 1 in 100 chance of catching covid here, is 1 in 50 there.
It's lagging because America went "mask-free" earlier.
But it still means 1 plane load of Americans (500~) die from covid EACH DAY in America, about half (200~) in Japan.
Because most travelers have no Japanese medical insurance coverage, and getting covid sucks, n95 masks, or at minimum a good surgical type mask (sold everywhere in Japan) recommended at all times. Cheap insurance.
(And no, the vaccines don't work well... All the data shows protection wanes below 25% after 3-4 months post injection, so don't expect that'll save you.
The Elderly 65+ remain the 80%+ of covid deaths, so while the young might not die, they'll have the worst flu-like illness when they do catch it like my many young friends have reported. Like can't get up, can't eat, can't move ill.)
...
$1 to 140 yen+ means you get a nice discount of about 25% on everything vs 110 last year.
Narita currency converter is ok. Otherwise, you'd have to hunt down the best places with the best rates, or utilize multicurrency accounts like Wise+ their card to avoid transaction fees etc.

IF you go during heavy RAINY weeks, you'll NEED serious waterproof jackets and pants.
Not the baby stuff for light rains, we're talking end of World like rains that'll soak you in 1 minute.
IF you go during snowy WINTERY cold days, think ski jacket/pants warm. You know what Shriveling cold winds.
But oddly, all my girls think it's totally ugly to be wearing anything BUT cute short skirts in sub-freezing Tokyo winters...which many of their native young girls do, too.
