I was looking to cash out a gift card and noticed they added a Walmart gift card option, and they are adding 5% bonus. Goes from $5-200.

I held out for YEARS after doubling my money on that deal - like $2000 between 3 cards.

Now the best, repeatable, deal seems to be around the Holidays when they offer Happy cards @ 20% discount, and the card is accepted at Lowe's where you can buy 3rd party GC with it, so for me it's basically an Amazon 20% discount. That's happened the past 2 or 3 years.
But why buy a gift card for 5% off when you can just use PayPal at Walmart to get 5% off?
No gift cards with gift cards anymore.

Digging these Discover IT GC deals lately or maybe I was just never aware of them years ago.

Yep, they've been around for at least 15 years. In the earlier versions, some retailers had up to 20% off (usually the higher margin stuff like FTD or cruise lines) but everything seems to be around 5% now.

Still, it's great — I treat cashback bonus like a magical savings account, then when an appliance dies, I cash in at Lowe's and pay for most (or all) of it. Really helps the cash flow!

The only downside of this is losing any extended warranties from credit cards on those big ticket purchases. I try to use GCs for items that are not in that category.

Most of us finished that at least a month ago.

I usually pay for a small portion with the card — Discover said that was all that was needed!

Plus, for modern appliances I usually opt for a real warranty (like 5 years) because failure rates are getting so high. Especially for "must haves" like fridges and washer/dryers.

I wouldn't want to test that theory on a $5000 item where you paid $500 with your Discover card and the rest with Lowe's GCs. I've never heard any CC covering the entire purchase when their card was used for paying for the fraction of the total cost.

If you're paying for standalone extended warranties, that's always an option, but it eats into savings by buying and using GCs.

When I go to that link, that's to cash out the reward points right? 4 ways on that page, cash, travel miles, and 2 other ones but I don't see gift card anywhere, wonder if it's YMMV, I checked everywhere I don't see the walmart or gift card, at the very bottom I see gift card but it wants me to log in again and it's not gift card related, very strange. Where exactly did you find your walmart gift card option?

Make sure you're logged in to discover first. Then when you click on the link, it's literally the first gift card that pops up. Hope this helps.

Back in May of 2011, Discover had Shell gift cards at 50% of face value. Looks like I bought 12. I remember post of people spending thousands. Smilie

I had some shell gc from Discover from years ago, and they got deactivated from inactivity.
