We have these at work although looking at it now I think our specs are a bit better running an 11th gen i7 with 8 gb.

They work well for what we use them for which is a lot of Epic work so it doesn't really tax the system too much. You can have multiple browsers open without any issue. Our IT department does a good job of locking these things down though and running minimal programs on them. Don't ask me how I know but all the streaming sights work just fine 😉

It does need to be flashed every once in awhile but I think that has more to do with our abuse of these computers. They are constantly on and being used 24/7.

The form factor is nice and you can mount it behind a monitor for a nice clean look. One thing I don't like is the power supply is from a laptop so it has the round barrel style so it can easily slip out which of course causes the computer to shut down immediately since there is no laptop battery.

One of these i5s or a Optiplex 5040-SFF, i5-6500, 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD, DVD, Win 10 Pro w/ keyboard and mouse for about $125?

I know the processor is newer in this one w/ 2 more cores but not sure about difference otherwise.

w11 only on gen 8 so there is that.

SFF is more upgradable.

These have WiFi and Bluetooth.

So sort of depends on what you want to use it for.
For a family member who doesn't game, doesn't need Wi-Fi or Bluetooth & isn't interested in Windows 11.

i5s here are $50 more, don't come w/ a SSD or mouse & keyboard. I thought the SSD would make things noticeably faster - is gen 8 that much better than gen 6?

I really appreciate the answers, it's hard shopping for somebody else. I wouldn't buy any of these old computers for myself.

All of these are 8th gen. You can tell by looking at the first number i.e. 8500T

None of them is available now even though Dell shows "in stock"
A bait to buy other products at their site.

Thought there would be 50% on top of the displayed price. Sad day. 😂

About the size of a cigar box, these things are pretty good as a streaming device. Just hook it up to your big screen and add a bluetooth keybaord. Browse to your favorite service and you are all set. Windows 11 won't like these, but any flavor of Linux would.

I would recommend 16gb of RAM though.
i5-8th generation is supported by Win 11.

This is not a good deal. You want a retro gaming machine get a cheap android TV box

You should be able to find a laptop with similar power and the benefit of mobility or docking.
The only laptop you're finding for $200 or less is a Chromebook so please stop kidding yourself.

I have about 15 of these in-use at my work. They're pretty solid as a workstation, ours have WiFi and BT modules so they're easy to set up with wireless networking and peripherals. Win11 supported. SATA and NVMe slots for storage, HDMI and DisplayPort for outputs.

power supply is a barrel plug, so you'll have to make sure to match that connector if you ever have to replace it.

I found it too hard to find a raspberry pi at a decent price to install Home Assistant on and these little guys do the trick nicely. However, I would buy one off facebook marketplace and not here.

Newer chip probably newer igp, that matters, even if sff it would be impractical to upgrade gpu, both have upgradable ram, but its impractical to add more cores later, would always get the better cpu.
