I found this to be the best solution to keep using Nikkor APS C DX senses I have and downsize to a smaller mirrorless body.

That is my experience as well. I've been window shopping for a year to get a smaller body for easy carry. I finally bit on the 2 lens Z50. I want decent stills and easy portability. I have 6 F-mount lenses already. This seems to be the best fit for me.
Going from DSLR to mirrorless, I wanted a smaller and lighter size. I like a lot about FF. The A7C seemed the answer, but the EVF was not for me also the lenses except the kit lens, would be big, negating the compact size. I also considered an A7iii, but decided to stay APS C. I used an A6600 for a few weeks, great AF and an excellent camera, but coming from years of Nikon use, I missed the ergonomics and lack of front dial.
In the end the the Z50 seems to be the right fit for me. With the Z30 and Zfc I hope to see more lenses one of these days. Maybe some DX Sigma and Tamrons, If not, I am ok with the two kit lenses and FTZ adapter letting use my old ones.

I am not a video guy, so I am not sure what the best pick below 1k is. I know Panasonic MFT cameras are well regarded in the video space.

my small city has a population of around 140,000. As of today, there are only TWO public public charging station.(actually, not even charging stations, just two charging pods on the ground level of the city-operated parking garage)
the only cameras that have been decimated by smartphones are those $100 cheap point & shoot cameras.
GL anyone else who went for this getting a new one.

I'd spend the majority on lenses. Get a refurb DSLR (like a D3500 or if you want a touch screen, D5600) and a few lenses depending on what you shoot. A $800 body is really meant for a user with thousands in lenses. If you just use the cheap kit lenses I wouldn't bother.
I use a $400 Nikon 85mm f/1.8 lens to shoot kids sport that aren't too close or too far (i.e. it's ok for kids outdoor soccer, indoor soccer or football but not for full field football). For outdoor I use a refurb $130 Nikon 70-300 AF-P DX if the 85mm is too short.
For portraits of kids, the refurb 35mm f/1.8 is $150 and is amazing. You can get portrait style photos from a phone (blurred backgrounds), but it only works if the subject is not moving - which for kids is rare. A fast (f/1.8) prime will let you capture kids who are always in motion. I used that and a 50mm prime constantly when the kids were 0-8 or so.
You will get much better pictures from a cheap DSLR and prime lenses than a $800 Z50 and the slow (doesn't capture much light so shutter speeds are lower) kit lens.
