The M1 pro is faster with multi-threaded apps than the M2 because it has more performance cores. The M2 is faster in single threaded apps though because it's faster per performance core.

They're throwing the "pro" names everywhere, so I can understand the confusion.

Compare it to the Intel naming conventions, i3 , i5, i7 and i9. So similarly this is the order in Apple silicon - M1, M2, M1Pro, M1Max.

For normal users M1 is still a good option. But some might end up paying close to this for RAM & Storage upgrade. So for them it makes sense to go with this one, rather than buying the upgraded M1 / M2 Air.

But the m2 pro could be released soon. It'll obviously be near or at msrp for a while though.

That's the comparison to make imo.

Is there a big difference from the M1 chip to M2 chip? Thinking about picking this up but I'm not sure

I heard the M1 Pro (on this laptop) is better than M2?

Can you send a source on that? Also when does the m2 mbp come out? Any rumors on release date?

Any warranty hack that would make it worth getting here over waiting for Costco to reduce prices again?

I heard that the new M2 Pro will have fairly minimal differences between the M1 pro (at least compared to the old Intel chips). Hoping so because I just bought this version with the M1 Pro chip! 🤞

In case anyone cares, the new M2 encoder improved on ProRes only. For h264 and h265 it didn't improve at all.

Is this a good choice for 4K video editing? I'm ready to move to Mac and debating waiting for the new M2 MPB vs snagging one of these. The price is tempting…

Keep in mind that Apple might also update other things on the M2 pro — Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth 5.3, etc. Not the end of the world for most users, but it's just something to keep in mind.
