I got this deal earlier this year for same price with an i7-1195g7 and am satisfied with it. I only have one problem with it in that when I connect my bluetooth speaker it interferes with the wifi and it starts slowing down to the point where the wifi completely dies. But I downgraded to Windows 10 and let windows update apply the drivers and I never got around to trying the bluetooth/wifi on Windows 11 so can't say if it's a driver or hardware issue. It only has 1 NVME slot and no room for a 2.5" drive.
I would suggest you upgrade to the fog blue or teal green version (+$10). The silver keys are hard to see. Also upgrade to the backlit keyboard which is a free upgrade.

Isn't the low tier HP Victus better for only like 50 bucks more?

Just bought not too long ago when price was $598. And, if you have Honey, you might get a popup for additional cash back.

I have to buy a work laptop for the first time in years. What's a good deal under $1k? I have no idea what to look for in terms of specs these days.

Nice to see another pavilion laptop with PD/charging over USB-C. Picked up one a couple years ago with a Ryzen 4700U, and have been very happy. Most of the somewhat budget friendly HP laptops lately haven't had USB-C charging, unfortunately.

If you are Indoors that screen is fine. Laptop is good at this price. Most users won't noticed the ram speed.
