Also check manufacture date on the box before you open these. They all have 10 year max lives and will automatically deactivate at year ten (by law)

On sale because they're all old stock, half the life half the price.

Ordered 6. Received 5 (1 shows up as "Delayed", who knows if it will ever ship).

4 out of 5 were manufactured in July 2022.
1 out of 5 was manufactured in January 2018.

I doubt I have any recourse with the almost-5-year-old smoke detector, I'll probably end up returning that.

I'm going to pile onto the absurdity of this design even more.

A person could purchase multiple Protects with differing manufacture dates. They install all of them at the same time, but eventually the first one will deactivate when it reaches the programmed expiration. Are they just going to replace the 1 unit, or buy replacements for all at the same time, thus repeating the same problem of getting varying manufacture dates?

There just has to be a better way to make this product, I'm just not seeing it.
No company wants to be sued to the ground if a sensor failed due to the mandated 10yr expiration. There really is no way around this. Blame lawyers + google for shipping too many large batches

I got 6 in total from this deal:
  • 3 (old packaging) x 2016
  • 1 (old packaging) x 2017
  • 2 (new packaging) x 2022

You can check the serial number, char 9 and 10 are the manufactured year. I've confirmed this on all 4 old packaging units and thats the way to tell.
As far as the new packaging units go, looks like that is NOT the case. Perhaps its Char 11 and 12, but both my new packaging units have 222000 in the middle, so hard to tell if the 11th and 12th are actually the year or not.

I'm envisioning a sensor attached to a circuit board that plugs into the detector body. When it expires, one slides the old sensor out and places a "refill" sensor back in. Kinda like replacing the 9v battery. Slide old one out, place new one in.

Fire it up and let us know what digits to use, if you would.

what do you mean by fire it up lol
I opened the box, and confirmed that the manufactured year on the label coincides with the serial number chars 9 and 10 for the old packaging, as far as the new packaging, it may or may not be chars 11 and 12, but dont think that turning the unit on and linking it to the app will show any additional details as I already have the manufactured year and serial numbers Smilie

Unless I am of course missing the point of your request lol

I didn't realize you know the manufacture date and couldn't determine what part of the SN coincides with it.

My assumption was that ww/yy format is unique enough that you could determine what part of the SN it was by knowing which week and month the unit was manufactured in the app, or at least doing a little figuring based on remaining life.

Ahh okay, no the date is printed on the back of the unit once you get it out of the box. It says manufactured date and end date, which is a 10 year span.

I got 2 from Best Buy today that were built in week 30 of 2022…I have 2 others week 30 of 2021. Not sure it's worth it to try to exchange for a newer one on those

I'd keep anything 2020 or newer personally.

My summary of 3 different stores;

qty 3 - order cancelled
qty 3 - all manufactured 2018
qty 1 - manufactured 2017

Still haven't tried repurchase, return strategy yet.

One more data point if it helps. I think the 3 I ordered were all shipped from walmart.com (and not individual stores). So far, 2 out of the 3 were manufactured this year. So online stock is likely newer than the ones in store.

I got 4 in total.
2 made in 2022
1 made in 2020
1 made in 2017 😵

All were store pickups/shipped from store and the most ghetto walmart gave me the 2017
