Is it okay to cut these shorter and make like a bunch of 5 ft Cat5e cables?

This is a stranded cable (as opposed to solid). It's a good price, just nothing amazing.

Do you need an amazing network cable? 😄

Is solid better?

The general thought is that solid is better for longer runs (like if you're planning on getting anywhere near the theoretical length limits) and permanent installations that won't really move, and stranded is better for cables that you're likely to move around or installations that really need flexibility for some reason.

this is stranded, so that may be challenging. if it was solid, then yes.

The weight of the cable is certainly more than one pound. The amount of copper in this cable? Absolutely not more than one pound.

Fwiw you can get these for free from your technician. The Verizon guy who installed my fios happily gave me a 50ft ethernet from his truck.
