Once you're in the $300 range you can get yourself a nice off lease or used corporate laptop. I'd be very worried about the longevity of these devices
That's what I did. I feel as though the corporate devices tend to be more repair friendly as well. Maybe it depends on the specific model though.

Can you recommend any or suggest what to look for? Just need something that will run the few programs and things my kids need for school that their Chromebooks won't. We want touchscreen. Thank you for your consideration.

For someone who can wait till BF but has a budget of around $300, is it a good deal given the specs seem nice?

wow this brand is a blast from the past. I'm pretty surprised their still in business.
They sold the name. Not the same company at all.

If you run Linux, beware that lots of distros have problems with the Intel® Iris® Xe Graphics. Was trying to help someone this week with that GPU and it was a hassle.

Thank you. Microsoft, especially excel...for school papers, assignments, and exams that have to be logged in to. I hope that makes sense.

Gateway? Any deals on Compaq or Packard Bell?
Maybe I can finally use this AOL CD-ROM I've had in my desk drawer with 50 free hours on it!

I got the same refurbished for that 329 price a week ago. The one I got seems almost never used from battery report and looks very new. Was able to upgrade to windows 11 and I am satisfied with build quality and performance.

Is the better processor and build quality, but less RAM worth the extra $120 if I buy the open-box one? I am not planning to play games on it. Thank you

Same here! That's why I clicked on this link, to see if it was really the Gateway I was thinking of from back in the day, lol! AND IT IS! I'm shocked tho, I really didn't think they still existed. When my 17" Gateway laptop finally died just a few years ago, and it lasted a lonnnnng time, I swear I looked for Gateway and couldn't find it anywhere. Ended up with a Lenovo.
Gateway was bought by Acer and now it's their "budget" brand for Walmart (like Acer isn't already a budget brand laugh out loud)

The processor in the one you linked isn't strictly better. The 11th gen i5 has slightly better single core performance. Unless you're using highly parallelized (and demanding) programs, you probably wouldn't notice a difference. Your bottleneck with the R7 machine would be the RAM - 8GB is not future proof at all. Additionally 256GB hard drive is pretty darn small.

So my opinion is no, not worth the extra (in fact, even at the same price I'd probably take the gateway).
